CVPO OFFICER NOMINATIONS 2009-2010:
All current CVPO Officers were nominated and are willing to continue serving in their respective positions for the 2009-2010 school year. Elections will be held at the May 14th CVPO meeting and voted on. A suggestion was made for next year, to offer anyone interested in being an officer a chance to “shadow” the current officers leading up to the May 2010 elections.
PARENT’S COFFEE @ 11:45 a.m. WITH CHERIE STROUD. Cherie introduced Deputy Weikel and his canine deputy, Bus.
According to district policy, the superintendent has the authority to determine the need for the use of drug detection dogs to “sniff out contraband in district owned storage areas or in student vehicles parked on district property upon reasonable suspicion to believe that contraband is in the area or a vehicle.” This district policy is being introduced to parents in order to give them a chance to see how the canine unit works and how it can be used as a preventative tool in dealing with the illegal use of drugs, alcohol etc on campuses district wide. Some districts have used canine units as a deterrent to illegal drug use on campuses. Cherie stressed that the Corvallis School District is looking at the use of a Canine Unit as a proactive, preventative measure in drugs and alcohol use rather than a reactive, punitive measure. Bus would not be used in close proximity to students such as in classrooms or hallways but instead he would be used only in hallways or parking lots when students were not in close proximity such as during a fire drill, etc. In the April 2009 District School Board Meeting, Deputy Weikel and the Drug Canine Unit will be introduced to attendees of the meeting.
