September 13, 2007 CVPO Meeting and Principal Coffee
CVPO Business
Minutes: The minutes of the 5/10/07 meeting were approved.
Treasurer's Report: Debbie Cassidy presented the report for 5/31/07-8/31/07. Income from escrip of $12.49 and disbursements for the staff appreciation lunch of $237.85 left available funds of $980.22.
A budget for 2007-2008 was proposed, discussed, and modified with the following changes: $350 for the two conference dinners, $50 for printing, $0 for the open house, $0 for the Directory which again will be donated by Julie Gardner and Pinnacle Mortgage Co. Julie will submit an estimate of total Directory costs for future budgeting.
A motion was approved to award teacher grants this fall in the amount of $2,500. Cherie Stroud will solicit proposals due Oct. 1. A grant review committee (Roberta Lundeberg, Bill Brock, Julie Gardner, Debbie Cassidy, and Tammy Davis) will present recommendations to the CVPO.
The Marine Science class, because it is new, has a special and urgent need for cash and equipment. If you're interested in making a donation, contact the Marine Science teacher, Dave Behren (david.beran@ corvallis. k12.or.us) or Cherie Stroud (cherie.stroud@ corvallis. k12.or.us).
Volunteer News/Committee Chairs: Amy Adamski is coordinating volunteers. Please fill out a new volunteer interest form (available in the office) even if you have returned one in previous years. Also, all volunteers must submit a new criminal background check form every year.
Katherine Cleland agreed to serve as Fundraising Coordinator, Julie Gardner will be the Open House Coordinator, Nanette Armstrong will coordinate the Spring Conference Dinner, and the position of summer 2008 Mailing Coordinator is still open. This job involves recruiting 12 volunteers to collate and stuff the registration packet material during the first week of August 2008.
Fundraising Activities: Katherine Cleland will prepare a brochure and an e-mail message explaining in detail how to participate in easy and scrip-like fundraising. These include escrip, Albertson's preferred, Washington Mutual WaMuLa, Target, First Alternative Coop, Office Max Perks, and Cartridges for Schools.
E-Mail List: Between the CVPO Yahoo Group and Alex Vincent's personal e-mail, the CVPO reaches about 1000 e-mail addresses. The current listserv system, Yahoo Groups, allows only 10 new e-mails to be added every day, so there is lag time at the beginning of every school year until all the new addresses are in the listserv. We are in the process of changing over to the district's parent listserv system, and more information on this will come later.
Announcements: The district's Boundary Committee will hold a public meeting at Cheldelin Middle School on Tuesday, September 18, 7:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for you to give your input. For more information regarding this issue go to Boundaries Input .
If your business is interested in displaying a sign on the football field, contact Julie Gardner at gardnerfarm1@ hotmail.com.
Gavin Milligan is a CV student recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. To assist him and his family, contact Martha Fontaine (oregonfontaines@ comcast.net or754-9592) or go to Help Gavin .
CVPO/Principal Meeting Dates: Meetings will be held on the second Thursday of the month, except for October, November, and April, when there is no school on that day. During these months, the meeting will be held on the first Thursday. Meetings for the 2007-8 school year are:

Principal Topics
New Staff and Enrollment: Cherie welcomed new and returning parents and introduced new staff members who were in attendance. This year, CV has 95 staff members, which include 12 new teachers, 6 new classified staff members, and one new administrator. The new hiring primarily resulted from passage of the local option levy last year.
Student enrollment is 1034, which breaks down to 301 freshmen, 254 sophomores, 252 juniors, and 227 seniors. The district's PR2 Committee estimated that capacity is 1500 students, however every classroom is being used, and with the addition of 12 teachers, the school is experiencing some infrastructure insufficiency (desks, phones. etc.).
Schedule and Course Offerings: The new classes are Woodworking (2 sections), Marine Science (3 sections), Freshman Focus (4 sections), and AP Spanish (1 section). CV students travel to CHS for Auto Mechanics, upper level German, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and Technical Theater. CHS students travel to CV for AP Government and Politics, Engineering, and Anatomy and Physiology. Next year, CV will offer AP Chemistry and German 3.
There was discussion on perceived budget inequity between CV and CHS. The district budget committee is currently meeting to determine resource allocation. If you wish to give your input, contact the district's business manager, Kathy Rodeman at kathy_rodeman@ corvallis. k12.or.us.
Link Crew: Cherie reported that freshman orientation day was fun and energized, although not all freshmen received a welcome call beforehand from their Link Leader, perhaps because of the holiday weekend. Link Leaders visited advisor on Thursday to discuss appropriate dance behavior. Link Leaders will meet with their freshman groups about once a month. Next year, a Link Leader class, which will expand on leadership skills, may be offered.
Open House: Will be held on Wednesday, September 26 at 6:45 p.m. with a welcome in the auditorium by Cherie. Parents will proceed through their student's schedule of classes beginning with their period 1 class at 7:00. During the advisor period on Thursday, Sept. 20, students will prepare a schedule sheet for their parents to use at Open House. Please bring this sheet with you to Open House.
Site Council: CV has an active Site Council and at the end of last year developed a School Improvement Plan. Link Crew and Freshman Focus are examples of implementation of the plan.
Upcoming Events:
Open House: Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6:45 p.m. in the Auditorium
CVPO/Principal Coffee: Thursday, Oct. 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the staff dining room
