May 8, 2008

CVPO Business

Minutes:  The minutes of the 4/03/08 meeting were approved.

Correspondence:  Thank you cards were received from teacher Marilyn Wake for
the retirement gift received from the CVPO, librarian Kay Eilers for the
teacher grant for electronics for the library/media center and from the
teachers who attended the April conference dinner.

Treasurer’s Report:  Available funds of $1,147.76 were reported, which is no
change from last month. Checking account activity since 4/30/08 was $24.78
for conference dinners and $133.75 for Staff Appreciation Lunch with
approximately $60 more to be spent for the lunch, leaving a balance of about
$930.

Volunteer News:  Three officer positions for ’08-’09 are unfilled:
Vice-President, Volunteer Coordinator and Corresponding Secretary.  In
addition, there are four open Chairpersons: Spring Conference Dinner
Coordinator, Staff Appreciation Lunch Coordinator, National Honor Society
Initiation, and Breakfast Coordinator (fall ’08). Please contact
Alex@vincent-hill.com for more information.

Officers for Next Year:  A motion was made, seconded, and passed to accept
the following slate of CVPO officers for ’08-’09:

President:   Nanette Armstrong
Secretary:  Alex Vincent
Treasurer:  Susie Zaremba

Bylaws:  A motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve the Bylaws as
amended. A copy is attached.

Environmental Sciences Projects:  Students Lizzie Tuttle and Megan Blass
presented on some work they’re doing on carpooling, bio-diesel and “No
Idling” signage as part of Peg Cornell’s AP Environmental Sciences Course.
Kalli Wells and Casey Gifford are working with Lizzie and Megan but were not
present.

Lizzie asked for parents to not idle their cars at CV and to use peer
pressure on others to do the same.  She is lobbying the district to erect
“No Idling” signs at all schools and would appreciate parents’ support in
that effort.  The School Board and Superintendent can be contacted at
schoolboard@corvallis.k12.or.us.

The girls also asked parents to encourage their students to carpool to
school, as long as they are legally permitted to. Families can communicate
and coordinate to do this. Also, students could be made to pay for their own
gas as an incentive to carpool.

45% of CV students ride the bus. Megan has researched what it would take for
Laidlaw Bus Company to convert to bio-diesel fuel for all its school buses.
It appears that the only thing standing in the way is the added cost of
bio-diesel over regular diesel and the amount fluctuates with fuel prices.
Megan will make a presentation to the School Board and ask that the district
assume this cost.

Fundraising Proposal:  Katherine Cleland, CVPO Fundraising Coordinator,
presented a proposal called the “CV Excellence Campaign” that she developed
with fellow parent Rhonda Simpson and Fred Kane, Executive Director,
Corvallis Public Schools Foundation.

The proposal is “Have a new group “CV Excellence Team” sponsor a fundraising
campaign via the 509J foundation, providing education, pledge cards,
referrals to the foundation pledge web site and training to fundraising
coordinators (parent volunteers who act as treasurers or fundraisers for
organizations) and teachers on how to work with the foundation.” The goal is
to raise $25,000 by Nov. 2008.

Katherine pointed out that CV is one of the least developed schools in 509J
with respect to use of the foundation for financial support and has raised
less than 2/3 of the amount CHS has raised through the foundation so far
this year.

Katherine identified four meetings needed before moving ahead:

1.      Activities and athletics directors to identify areas of need for funds.
2.      Denise Purdy, CV bookkeeper.
3.      CVPO for support and communication.
4.      Fundraising chairs which Katherine will identify and contact.

Discussion ensued covering many areas including these concerning the
Corvallis Public Schools Foundation:

1.      Legal issues with single designation and tax deductibility for contributions.
2.      Accounting and oversight.
3.      How much money is donated the CV outside of the foundation? Perhaps
Denise could provide a figure.
4.      Katherine claimed there are donors available who want to give large sums
to CV but need a focus.
5.      The effect on the CVPO’s tax exempt status.

There were also questions and concerns about the “Possible Donor Sheet”
which lists targeted donation areas. Does it include everything and does it
bias giving to one area or another?  Another area of discussion was whether
the CVPO should be the overseeing organization given the concerns. It was
generally concluded that the CVPO would not oversee but have a
representative on the “CV Excellence Team.”

The proposal document, which is still in draft form, is attached. Questions
and suggestions to Katherine Cleland at 231-4445 or tkcleland@yahoo.com.

When I sent my minutes on this section to Katherine to read for accuracy
before posting to the listserv, she replied in detail to clarify the
proposal.  I have attached this document as well.

Next CVPO Meeting:  The next meeting and Principal Coffee will be a no-host
lunch at Woodstock’s Pizza at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 5th. Everyone is
invited to this opportunity to bid farewell and thank CVPO volunteers who
are leaving the school. The restaurant is located at 1045 NW Kings Blvd.
Slices and salads are available for about $5 and if you’d like a whole pizza
ready when you arrive, call the day before: 752-5151

Principal Topics

Tardy Policy:  Assistant Principal Mike Fagan announced that he will be
resigning from his administrative position at the end of the year and will
work as a physical education teacher and assistant football coach at CV next
year.  There will be a pooled search with CHS for new Assistant Principals.

Mike, along with Dan Cleary, a new member of the student support team, has
implemented several new strategies to improve student behavior.  There will
be a bell system next year, which will ring slightly before class is to
begin and at the start of class.  Unexcused absences are being tracked
through Pinnacle and lunch detention is given when a certain number is reached.

Accreditation Visit:  CV was highly commended by the state accreditation
team. Cherie will post the formal report of the visit on the school web site
when it is available.
