Prior to open house there will be an informational meeting regarding requirements for earning honors credit in physics, chemistry, and marine science. The meeting will begin at 5:30 PM in room F-21 and will last as long as there are questions. The overall goal of this meeting is to provide students and parents with the information they need in deciding whether or not to pursue the honors option in these classes. This meeting precedes the fall open house, the idea being to consolidate the number of times students have to come to CV in the evening.

All students are to complete this Literature Review Assignment on an individual basis. The primary source articles students select MUST be obtained from OSU's Valley Library. Students must obtain unique articles from one another. In other words, two students working in the same group can not review the same article. To assist students with their research at the Valley Library, students are invited to an informational session that will be held at the Valley Library on Friday, 10/10/08 (see below). This assignment is due on either Monday 10/13 (for Odd classes) or Tuesday 10/14 (for Even classes).
FRIDAY, 10/3/08
All student groups need to submit their group topic and an initial question TODAY.
FRIDAY, 10/10/08
All students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting regarding the use of OSU's Valley Library. The meeting is scheduled to take place from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM in the Autzen room of the Valley Library. The Valley Library is located in the center of OSU's campus and can be located on this Interactive OSU campus map. At this meeting, students will be shown how to complete data base searches of scientific journals, find a journal in print, and physically locate the article. A good portion of the meeting is intended to allow students to collect articles and other resources for their projects. BRING CHANGE AND/OR MONEY SO THAT YOU CAN PHOTOCOPY YOUR ARTICLES!!

Your teachers have decided to add another assignment that we wish to have turned in on Wednesday, October 29th. We are assigning this not to siimply add to the shear amount of things you have to do. Rather, we realize how critical this initial phase is for a successful project and how helpful it will be for you to, once you have refined your initial topic and question, take the time to perform some additional research. This always helps researchers to quickly and efficiently develop a viable and legitimate investigation. So, we are asking each group to complete this Final Topic Assignment. Again, this is a GROUP assignment -- only a single copy for the group needs to be turned in. Please stop in and clarify any questions you have with your instructor prior to this due date.
WEDNESDAY, 10/29/08
The timeline was revised today to give students another week with which to prepare their initial project outlines. Use this Proposal Outline Guidelines to complete your proposal. Proposal grades will be based on adherence to these guidelines. DO NOT MINIMIZE THE PROCEDURE SECTION -- IT SHOULD BE COMPLETE, REFLECT EXTENSIVE THOUGHT ON YOUR PART, AND IT SHOULD ALLOW THE READER TO COMPLETE YOUR PROJECT IN ITS ENTIRETY WITHOUT REQUIRING THE READER TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS OF YOU.
THURSDAY, 11/6/08
There will be an informational meeting at lunch in F-21 to discuss the paperwork required for ISEF. AT LEAST ONE PERSON FROM EACH GROUP SHOULD ATTEND THIS MEETING! Feel free to bring food for lunch. The ISEF webpage will be demonstrated. Students are responsible for going to the NWSE Web Page and learning what paperwork is required for their projects. Paperwork must be submitted and signed before students can begin work on their projects.
Initial Paperwork Checklist. This lists what should be turned in by Wednesday 11/12 and Thursday 11/13. Some of the ISEF forms (such as the abstract form) can't be completed yet. But many of the forms can and should be completed by this date. Students -- in order to complete the online version of these forms YOU HAVE TO GO TO YOUR TEACHER, PRESENT FORM 1 TO HIM, AND HE MUST ENTER YOU AS A GROUP. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN COMPLETE YOUR FORMS. YOUR TEACHER WILL GIVE YOU AN EXHIBIT NUMBER AS WELL AS A PASSWORD. And the only way you can get Form 1 completed is to know exactly what you will be doing for your project.
Group Evaluation Form (to be completed when requested by your teacher).
Parent Permission Form. This must be signed by the parent and returned to school before students may participate in school-sponsored field trips. Fill in all blanks. Your teacher is the school representative. Mark the date of activity as "various throughout the year" -- so that this single permission slip will be good all semester. Students wishing to go off-site at any time (not just during class time) to pursue their research projects MUST complete this form and list on this form all locations you will be traveling to and the approximate times and dates. Again, indicating "Willamette River, Various times from November - April" is okay and can cover multiple trips with one form. You should also place CWOSE and NWSE on the form for location. Mark the appropriate means of transportation as well.
Student Driver / Rider Permission Form. This form must be signed by the parent before a student may drive themselves or others, or ride with other students to or from a school-sponsored activity (which is any step of your project, even on weekends, as well as to and from CWOSE). Parents only need to fill out the portion of this form that they wish to permit their students to do. Mark the date of activity as above so that this single permission slip will be good all semester.
Use of Private Vehicle Waiver Form. This form must be signed by ANYONE USING THEIR OWN VEHICLE (student or parent) during a school sponsored activity. In most cases, the student -- the driver -- will be completing this form.

The following are the guidelines you are to use when writing your final paper: Final Research Paper Guidelines. You will also use some of the guidelines listed here for portions of your Formal Proposal.
Statistical considerations for your investigation. All studies are to utilize regressions and/or t-tests to help support the conclusions you draw from the data you collect in your investigation. This Sample Spreadsheet illustrates the use of both of these tools using Microsoft Excel. Certainly there are other statistical tools that might be used when analyzing your data, however these are the only two required. If you feel that your investigation will not lend itself very well to the use of either of these tools, consult your teacher ASAP.
