How To Do Better in Class

The third common question is “How can my student do better in class?” In general, the best advice is to be sure that all assignments are complete and turned in on time.

Here are a few other suggestions.

If your student is willing, you can do several things to help.

·         Proofread essays and help your student clarify his or her ideas.

·         Help your student review the night before the test using the Key ID’s, flash cards, or on-line quizzes.

·         In the Government and AP Government classes, talk with your student about current events. Explain your views and ask your student for his or her perspective.

AP US History

·         Students may want to study with the practice quizzes linked on the class web site.

·         The Key ID’s at www.csd509j.net/staff/SherwiM/Key%20ID's.htm summarize the main ideas for each chapter.

·         Some students find it helpful to read a second text along with The American Pageant to see a different version of the events. Check the OSU Bookstore for used copies of US History texts.

AP Government

·         Students may want to study with the practice quizzes linked on the class web site.

·         The link for the Government in America practice quizzes http://wps.ablongman.com/long_edwards_government_11/0,7701,718366-,00.html also has chapter summaries, flash cards, and other helpful materials.

·         Paying close attention to current events helps. There are lots of great resources. I listen to NPR news, read the Oregonian, and check http://news.yahoo.com.
