Computer Skills
Building experience and learning standard document formats, students learn keyboarding and are introduced to applications of Microsoft’s Suite of business software applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Students work through a keyboarding software and produce a series of projects, covering a range of topics from computers, to reports with footnotes and bibliographies. Success in the class is simple; do the keyboarding lessons and turn in the timings, complete documents and projects required, and receive a good grade.

Fail to perform during class time, which is dedicated to learning keyboarding and completing projects, and a student will receive a failing grade. There should be no homework (unless the student chooses to do projects at home); there are no assessment tools, like quizzes or tests, requiring outside study time. If the student makes good use of their time in the class, they will succeed without any problem. Attendance may affect this potential for a high grade, but illness considerations can be taken, if the student speaks to the teacher and arranges to make up as much as possible during lunch or after school.

Time and self management is required for this class; demonstration of this skill is expected and directly affects potential grades awarded. The skills are important enough for students to make the effort to achieve a basic skill level; a goal for the class is the students' future ability for success in creating documents and reports with reduced time investments and better formatting skills and understandings. Timings of keyboarding are NOT taken into used when grading, but success in the class is consideration to be demonstrated by skill development. Increases in speed and accuracy, at some level, is expected.

Computer Skills 2
Building upon prior experience and Computer Skills 1 class, students learn more advanced applications of Microsoft’s Suite of business software applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Students produce a series of projects, ranging from simple templates, letter, memos and other standard business oriented documents, to more wide-ranging functions. Projects are based upon specific skill acquisition planning, with potential inclusion of at least part of LBCC’s Word class curriculum.

The class is “managed” with a “real world” environment of expectations, with students acting as support staff for a growing travel agency. With this scenario, students support the business functions of the travel agency while learning basic functions and interaction between applications in the suite. Merge letters, worksheets with formulas, layout and formatting of publications and more, add to student experience and engagement in learning. Many methods used in projects come directly from business office and college experiences and needs. Skills learned will add to the success of students and to their marketability to their career choice of the future.
