6th Grade Winning Poem
Metal Detector
by Lauren Gillespie
I'm using a metal detector at the playground,
And it started making a beeping sound. There
Must be something interesting to be found!
It could be a dinosaur bone,
Or an old telephone.
Or a treasure chest,
Or gold, that's the best!
It could be a diamond mine,
or a stop sign.
Maybe 5 million nickels
Or a jar of pickels.
So I dug in that spot
I didn't find a lot,
A bit of tree sap
And a bottle cap.

Little
by Mersedes Engle
Little is the waves
lapping up against the rocks
Little is the boat swaying
in the cool summer breeze
Little is the moon
hiding behind the clouds
Little is the mist
blanketing the harbor in white
Little is the gulls
forlorn cry in the early dawn
Little is the sunrise
dancing off the waters
Little is the lone house
all alone on the bluff
Little is the laughter
of a child splashing in the water

Games
by Molly Warner
Flashing lights
Bind my reason
Reality is a lie
All the seasons fly by fast
Before you know it
Your time has past
What you work for will never last
Stay inside
All night all day
There's no way
To get that time back
You lack the knowledge
To know why
All the little petty little games you play
Are just another way
To forget who you are
What you've wanted to become
They say people never change
But what I see every day
Rules out that way of thinking
Red lights blinking
Some games never stop
But your game is almost over
Wasted away
Well I'll just say
You can't restart, replay
A certain game that always gets its way

Looking for a Snack
by Abbie McClellan
The rectangular box of nutrition sits squarely in my kitchen.
When there's a grumble in my tummy I take a look inside.
So many choices I could make, peanut butter or
Chocolate cake. Then I spot bright red, sitting in a tub. I pick it
up and what's inside? A tiny
strawberry nub.
I see a box of pizza so I take a look inside, and nothings left
but pizza crust, I'm not that
satisfied!
There's nothing really here
Is there nothing left to eat?
Sour milk, squishy grapes, and a rotten piece of meat.
A drawer full of apples, oranges, and pears. All really
good for you.
Then I spot a block of tofu.........eeeewwwww!
I shut the refrigerator door because I begin to get cold.
All the things in here are gone,
gross, or really old.
Then I spot a note sticking on the freezer's door. I read
aloud "be back in an hour went to
the store!"
I guess I'll have to wait, cause there's nothing I can do.
I hope I'll still be hungry at a quarter after two! |
