Easy Ways to Earn Money for Cheldelin

!!Cheldelin Track Meet Moved!!

The Cheldelin Track Meet, originally scheduled to be held here at Cheldelin Thursday 5/8/08, has been RELOCATED TO CHS.  The meet will still be on Thursday 5/8/08 beginning at 2:00 PM, but it will be held at CHS.  All Cheldelin students are invited to attend the Track Meet.

Permission slips will be sent home on Monday afternoon with all our students, and will be available on the Cheldelin Website as well.

  • Students wishing to attend the track meet at CHS must return their completed, signed permission slip to the office by WEDNESDAY MORNING.

  • NO LATE PERMISSION SLIPS WILL BE ACCEPTED.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • The track meet will run until approximately 5:00 PM.  CHELDELIN STUDENTS WILL NOT BE TRANSPORTED BACK TO CHELDELIN.

  • All student attending the track meet at CHS, WILL NEED TO BE PICKED UP AT 5:00 WHEN THE MEET IS OVER.

As you may be aware, the Cheldelin track has some structural issues with both cracking and areas of missing asphalt that create 1-1 ˝” potholes of various sizes.  It does not appear to have gotten significantly worse this year than it has been for the previous 3-5 years when it was identified for replacement.  The district will shortly be going out to bid for track replacement this summer with funds from the Facilities Improvement Bond and with favorable bid results, the new track should be in place by the start of the ’08 school season.  A short term solution of cold patching and filling of the cracks may have been possible but would most likely not have resulted in a completely smooth surface and unevenness would remain.

Although the Cheldelin students have been using the track for PE and track practices without incident, the District’s Facilities and Maintenance Division recommends not using it for the inter-school track meet for the following reasons:

  • The track meet format may require all lanes to be used, not allowing the competitors to avoid the worst spots, which may be possible in a practice or PE setting.

  • Competitors using lanes with uneven sections of surfacing may be placed at an unfair disadvantage by having to adjust their stride to avoid these areas.

  • With the increased excitement from the competitive environment athletes may not be as aware of imperfections in the running surface and more likely to have an accident.

  • Bringing athletes from other schools in who are unfamiliar of the characteristics of the track increases the likelihood of an incident due to the surfacing.

Hopefully, the grandstand and new track surface will provide an exciting venue for the meet and next year the event can return to Cheldelin’s new track.

IS YOUR STUDENT READY FOR NEXT YEAR?

By now your 5th, 6th, or 7th grade student should have brought home a registration packet for the 2008-2009 school year. Please complete and return these forms as soon as possible, as they help us finalize our planning and get ready for next year. Packets should be returned to the office by Friday, May 23rd.

If your student has special scheduling needs (e.g. core classes in the morning, a certain teaching style, a shortened day, or the like), please pick up a Special Scheduling Request form, complete it, and return it to the office by Tuesday, May 13th. We will do our best to accommodate your requests, but please keep in mind that we are scheduling approximately 600 students, and we may not be able to grant all requests.

If your student will not be attending Cheldelin next year, please call Annette at 766-4820 to let us know so we can be prepared to send his or her records to the new school in a timely manner.

If you need a new copy of the registration packet, you can pick one up in the Cheldelin office.

For questions about your 8th grader’s high school registration, contact CVHS Counseling at 757-5815 or CHS Counseling at 757-5881.

TRACK YOUR STUDENT’S PROGRESS

Pinnacle Internet Viewer is a web-based application that allows you and your student to track grades and attendance. You can see what assignments are missing, how many days absent or tardy, total points earned, current grade in every class, etc. You can access the website by clicking on the link on this page that says Check Grades.

By now you should have a received a letter explaining how the system works and giving your login information. If you have lost it and need a new copy, contact Annette at 766-4820.

OFFICE PHONE USE CLARIFIED

We have recently removed office phone use. We keep a phone log, and are noticing that often the same students are using the phone day after day, often several times a day. Students are also leaving class saying they need to use the restroom or go to the library, and coming to use the phone instead.

Students are welcome to use the office telephone for emergencies.  Emergencies include things like illness or injury or missing the bus after school. They do not include after-school plans, or getting permission to ride a different bus. These arrangements need to be made before school. Students may also use the phone once per day at lunch time only for a brief, non-emergency call. Students may not make non-emergency calls at any other time, or more than once per day.

Thank you for your understanding.

5TH GRADE PARENT OPEN HOUSE

Please join us Monday, May 19th from 6:30-8:30 PM for an Open House designed to introduce 5th grade parents to 6th grade at Cheldelin Middle School.  You will have an opportunity to tour the school, meet staff, and learn about the 6th grade program.

This Open House is designed for parents only. 5th graders will be visiting Cheldelin with their elementary schools early in May.

Questions? Call Annette at 766-4820

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

We have volunteers in our office helping answer phones, dealing with counter traffic, assisting sick or injured students, in our classrooms helping teachers with all kinds of projects, in our library helping kids learn to read, and working on our 8th grade celebration and party. Volunteers make possible our magazine sale and book fairs, both of which raise much-needed funds for our school. Volunteers helped cook meals, load and unload luggage, and chaperone busses to and from Outdoor School. They ferry and supervise kids on field trips, help supervise the cafeteria and other common areas at lunch time, run the student store, generously donate their time, their money, and their talents to help make Cheldelin a better place for kids. We couldn’t possibly do it without you!

PROGRESS NOTICES

Each quarter, about midway through the quarter, Cheldelin sends home progress notices for students who are receiving a grade of D or below in any class. The last progress reports of the school year are tentatively scheduled to be sent home the week of May 13th.

If at any time during the year, you have questions or concerns about your child’ s progress, you are encouraged to contact teachers via email or by calling the school office at 757-5971. All district email addresses are of the following format: Firstname.Lastname@corvallis.k12.or.us.
