When
studying Ancient Civilizations, students learn to approach the study by
examining "culture universals." This allows them to compare
these ancient cultures to find what aspects they share, and what sets them apart as being
unique. Students learn valuable note-taking skills as they read resource
materials, view video tapes and listen to guest presenters. The
culminating activity asks each student to focus on a particular
culture universal and its relationship to three of the four studied
cultures. The student completes an illustrated Venn diagram and in
an oral presentation, addresses what the
cultures had in common related to the culture universal, and what
characteristics set them apart as different.
