-
Forehand
-
"Shake hands" type of grip
-
Face of racket perpendicular to floor
-
Little finger should be at the end or "butt" of the racket
-
A "V" will be formed by the thumb and pointer finger on top of the racket
handle
-
Backhand
-
Same grip as the forehand can be used
-
OR, Use the THUMB UP GRIP
-
Rotate the racket slightly so the thumb is along the wide side of the
racket

Ready position --- good athletic stance
-
The first step --- cross over step
-
Turn sideways for shot
-
Return back to the center of your half of court

go to assigned courts to work on:
-
Rally while changing grips
-
1 1/2 laps around gym not touching nets / Roll lines / stretches / Push-up,
20 seconds
-
Coop partners meet at dry erase board
-
Rule of the day: Net birdies that land in proper court are good
-
Service court review
-
Short and long service line
-
Service side line and middle line
-
Only person in service receiving court can hit serve
-
Service must be diagonal
-
A birdie landing on the line is good
-
Only one service try per server, unless the server misses the birdie
completely
-
Service receivers must stay in their own half of court can not switch
sides
-
Games will last until teacher says time, regular games are played to 11
or 15
-
Coop partners discuss how they think a deep and short serve is hit
-
Long / deep serve-teacher note-only pick 5 for students to work on
-
Stand sideways to receiver's court with feet shoulder width apart and
weight primarily on the back foot
-
Make sure the hitting wrist is cocked up as much as possible
-
Drop the shuttle far enough away from the body to force the hitting arm
to reach slightly for it
-
Drop shuttle before starting the swing
-
Be as relaxed as possible and try to generate maximum racket head acceleration
by snapping the wrist and rotating the forearm at point of contact
-
The racket face will be open (tilted back) at point of contact to allow
the upward trajectory. Too much height without depth indicates too much of
an open face. A low trajectory indicates that the racket face was too flat
-
Follow through with your whole body. Transfer the weight to the front
foot and lift up with the knees at point of contact
-
Rotate the shoulders and hips at point of contact to help generate power
and allow the racket to finish across the left shoulder
-
Concentrate on watching the birdie
-
Short serve-teacher note-only pick 5 for students to work on
-
Hold the shuttle chest high and lower the hitting hand to waist high
-
Keep the wrist cocked (do not snap it)
-
Point of contact should be just below the waist (This is slightly higher
than the long serve)
-
Primary movement is from the shoulders
-
Think of guiding the shuttle, not hitting it
-
Keep the shuttle as low and short as possible
-
Both serves, drop birdie down as far as racket is long
-
Beginners may hold racket at head to practice the serve
-
Demonstrate both short and deep serve
-
Show and demonstrate serving to targets
-
Serve diagonally
-
Partner gently sets racket on floor in one of four extreme corners of
the service reception court
-
Server attempts to hit racket head target
-
Then server sets racket in extreme corner, continue
-
Go back to assigned courts and serve to targets
-
Open volley/ Game play
-
Class closure
-
After students change, only our class may play until final bell rings
-
Rules
-
Change first.
-
Put stuff away, with one minute left before bell rings, count
birdies.
-
Go out locker room door
Day 4
-
After coming out of locker room, students check dry erase board, then
go to assigned courts to work on:
-
1 1/2 laps around gym not touching nets / Roll lines / stretches /
push-up
-
Meet at dry erase board with coop partner
-
Rule of the day: Line birdies are good
-
Review short and long serve teaching cues
-
Both serves, drop birdie down as far as racket is long
-
Coop partners discuss how they think a clear is hit
-
Clears -teacher note- only pick a few for students to work on -Clears
are defensive shots-
-
Forehand Underhand clear
-
Same short as an long / deep serve
-
Forehand Overhead Clear
-
Good preparation is a must. The racket should be taken back to the
back-scratching position as one moves into position
-
When the racket is taken back, it is important that the wrist be cocked
up
-
Turn sideways to the net
-
Hit the shuttle, extending as high as possible with the racket face pointing
slightly up
-
Transfer weight forward, snap the wrist, and rotate the forearm at point
of contact
-
Rotate the shoulders and nips as one would when throwing a ball
-
Hit the shuttle hard.
-
Hit the shuttle high and deep
-
Backhand Clears-teacher note-only pick a few for students to work on
-
Switch to the backhand grip while turning sideways
-
Cock the wrist down, bend the arm and reach behind the back when
preparing
-
Extend the arm outward at point of contact and try to generate as much
power as possible by snapping the wrist and rolling the forearm
-
The shoulder rotation is critical. It will be impossible to generate any
power without extensive use of the shoulders
-
Reach in front of the body (towards the net) to make contact
-
Demonstrate the Clears
-
Go to assigned courts
-
Serve to partner diagonally
-
Work on either a short or deep serve
-
Partner hits back a clear of their choice
-
Switch roles
-
Open volley on any court with any partner
-
Class Closure

After coming out of locker room, students check dry erase board, then
go to assigned courts to work on:
-
1 1/2 laps around gym not touching nets / Roll lines / stretches /
push-up
-
Meet at dry erase board with coop partner
-
Rule of the day: Only two players on a court at a time, extras rotate
in every two points
-
Review underhand, backhand and overhead clears -Clears are defensive
shots
-
Coop partners discuss how they think a smash is hit
-
Drives --- Drives are offensive shots --- Draw drives and clears on
board
-
Similar to smash, but hit higher to back of court
-
Similar to a sidearm clear
-
Point of contact creates a flat pathway
-
Smash
-
Get into position so contact can be made in front of the body with the
racket face angling down toward the court
-
It is far easier to smash from the forecourt than the back court because
of the angle the shuttle must travel. Also the shuttle slows down rapidly
and therefore may be easily returned when struck from deep in the court
-
Sharp downward angle is just as important as sheer speed. The smash is
a power stroke that must be placed at the opponents feet
-
Demonstrate the Smash and drive
-
Introduce and demonstrate the "3 shot combination"
-
You may only hit the birdie three times
-
Work only on the hits you are told to hit
-
Such as
-
Deep serve
-
High clear
-
Smash
-
This forces you to know how to hit the shot and how to set your shots
up
-
Do three shot combination
-
Open volley on any court with any partner
-
Class closure
-
After class routine
Day 6
-
After coming out of locker room, students check dry erase board, then
go to assigned courts to work on:
-
Do three shot combination
-
Deep serve
-
High short clear
-
Smash
-
1 1/2 laps around gym not touching nets / Roll lines / stretches /
push-up
-
Meet at dry erase board with coop partner
-
Rule of the day:
-
The person in the service reception court must hit the birdie
-
If you touch the net, you lose the point
-
Review Smash and drives
-
Introduce Drop shots, Cross court dink and Blocks
- Drop Shot
-
hit from deeper in the court
-
Preparation has to be the same as if one were going to clear or smash,
anything different will tip off the opponent that you are intending to do
a drop shot
-
On the overhead motion the racket face should be flat or pointing slightly
down
-
On the underhand motion the racket face will be open similar to the position
when clearing
-
The racket head should move slowly at point of contact
-
The shuttle should drop immediately after crossing just over the net
-
-
Net drops
-
Contact the shuttle as near net level as possible (Don't let it drop
-
Using not even a stroke, guide the shuttle over the net
-
Keep the shuttle low to the net and dropping before short service line
-
Cross court dink
-
Same technique as the Net drops
-
Angle head of racket and use the wrist to flick the shuttle to the opposite
side of the front of the court
-
Blocks
-
Do not try to take the racket back as there will not be sufficient time
-
Reach as quickly as possible trying to get the racket head out in front
of the shuttle
-
Try to keep the shuttle low. Aim for just over the top of the net
-
If the shuttle is smashed at the body, block it with the backhand
-
Both the forehand and backhand blocks will be hit with the forehand grip,
because there won't be enough time to change grips
-
Demonstrate the Drop Shot, dink cross court dink and block
-
Review "3 shot combo"
-
Students go back to assigned courts and do 3 shot combination
-
Deep serve
-
High short clear

block
-
1 1/2 laps around gym not touching nets / Roll lines / stretches /
push-up
-
OR 1 lap around track in preparation for the mile if weather permits
-
Meet at dry erase board
-
Rule of the day:
-
You can hit the birdie only after it crosses the net to your side, and
your racket can cross the net without touching it
-
If the birdie gets stuck on the racket for a moment, it is illegal
-
Review Net Drops, Cross court dink and Blocks

Target Heart Rate Lesson
-
You can see my article in the "OAHPERD Journal" on Cooperative
Learning or the article on this web site by clicking the hot button
above.
-
What is the
heart?
-
Why would you want to have a
strong heart
-
Prevent future or current
health complications (accidents)
-
Study and do school work better
-
Sleep better
-
Enjoy life better
-
Do better in sports or activity
-
Tell Phil Kelly car wreck
story
-
How is your heart
stimulated?
-
Do doctor "clear" routine
-
Electrically through the SA
Node (Sinoatrail Node)
-
What two things are
carried to the cells by the blood?
-
Which heart do you want - "Perky Heart" VS "Slow Heart" -
Demonstrate
-
Think of a toaster and it's warranty, when does the
toaster break down?
-
Day after warranty is over
the toaster breaks down
- The perky heart and slow heart are pumping
the same amount of blood, think of your heart as having a warranty to how many
times it would beat. Which heart will wear out faster? Which heart
do you want?
-
Since the heart is a muscle can we exercise it?
- Okay, If I tell John to go and run a lap, did he
exercise his heart?
- We can prove it now by taking 220 and subtracting
your age. This gives you your maximum heart rate. Do you want to
work out at your maximum? No, you want to work out at 60, 70, or 80% of
your max which is your target.
-
How long must you exercise
before you begin to condition your heart?
-
When counting your pulse,
what number do you begin
-
An untrained athlete
should work out at what percentage of their maximum heart rate?
-
A person out of shape
should work out at what percentage?
-
An active person or
athlete should work out at what percentage of their maximum heart rate?
-
A professional athlete
should work out at what percentage of their maximum heart rate?
-
What two places can you
use to find your heart rate
- Take heart rates and discuss what a low heart rate
(50 - 60), average heart rate (70 - 80) and a fast heart rate (90 - 100) are
and why they are different
- Talk about the numbers for their individual target
heart.
- Talk about the adjusted target heart rate people,
lower the resting, adjust the target lower and vice-versa.
- Have students stand up and take their heart rate
again
- Tell students how to take it on their own
-
Jog to clock
-
keep feet moving until heart rate is found and timing is
to begin
-
Time heart rate for 6 seconds starting with a zero
-
When finished times by 10 (17 would be 170)
- Have students walk around space for a few minutes
and then tell them to take their heart rate.
- Have student jog around space for a few minutes and
then tell them to take their heart rate.
- Review lesson the next few days

marks
-
Stride usually remain the same
- If
steps are too far forward or back
-
Take‑off board and what is a scratch
-
Method of obtaining steps
-
Run
opposite direction up track while partner watches for step
-
Do a
reverse run 4‑5 times until a spot where the foot hits is consistently
striking there
-
Try run
throughs 4‑5 times to see if steps are right
- Coop
partners discuss how to long jump
-
Approach
– Run should be an acceleration with the last few strides a maintaining of the
sprint. Check marks are used to prevent chopping the stride.
-
Take‑off
– Similar take‑off as the high jump. The next to last stride is a longer or
settling stride preparing for the gather or lift. The last stride is shorter
and the take‑off foot hits in a heel to toe action. The free leg drives up so
the upper thigh is parallel the ground.
-
Flight –
45 degree angle at take‑off.
Hitch Kick – A running action in the air or
Hang –Hips forward, arms and legs back
-
Landing – Good leg extension is important. It’s also
important for the arms to drive forward. You can either do the
Rear
end between the feet or Rear end to the side
-
Last person who jumps does
a quick rake before nest person jumps Cones show about where to start running
from Other cone has stake under it holding tape measure Always start with run
through to get steps
-
Coop partners review key
elements of the long jump
-
Role and stretches – Have
students raise hands to check their track teams
-
During stretches tell the
team that they should be determining who is better at which events for the
track meet, keep mental notes of who you want to do what events.
-
Out side to long jump pit
-
Show
take‑off board and what is a scratch
-
Show how
rake should always be left down

corner. Students in lane one will practice “dry” throws with the Frisbee, two
teammates will be in lane 4 with the “prompt sheet watching the throwers form,
and the person in lane 8 will throw. Throwers will throw and retrieve on my
command.
- Teams
will spend half the class at the long jump and discus corner
-
DISCUS –
instruct each group at the
area on the corner as follows
-
Show Grip
– Hold discuss so just the last digits of fingers are seen over the discuss,
can’t see the thumb though
-
Stand
sideways to throw, Throwing arm straight out behind, turned upside down
-
From a
standing up position, dip down and turn and lean backwards as non‑throwing
hand touches shoe farthest
-
Away
form throwing direction, causing a torque motion
-
Drive up
in a forward and 45 degree motion driving non throwing arm up forcefully
-
Legs
drive forcefully up while body torque’s, releasing discuss at a 45 degree
angle
- Show
and demonstrate a scratch throw
- Let
class throw and retrieve on teacher command. Commands go like this
-
“You may
throw”
-
“Retrieve”
-
“Prompters give 2 positives and one thing to work one”
