Join Literacy Partners - Support Middle School
Readers
Corvallis School District is entering its fourth
year of the Middle
School Literacy Partners program. Through
Literacy Partners, mentors meet weekly with a middle
school student from
Cheldelin or Linus Pauling to share their
love of reading. The program has consistently
increased students’ positive feelings about reading
and resulted in strong gains in their reading
skills.
Mentors meet for one hour per week with a student.
During this time, the student and mentor have a
chance to connect while participating in some simple
reading activities.
More mentors are needed for this year. If
you know of a potential mentor who can share an hour
a week with a child, please tell them about the
program. To get involved
they may contact:
Cheldelin: Tin Kha, CMS Assistant Principal,
541-757-5971,
tin.kha@corvallis.k12.or.us
Linus
Pauling: David Jakious, LPMS Assistant Principal,
541-757-5961,
david.jakious@corvallis.k12.or.us
CPSF: Fred Kane,
Foundation Executive Director, 541-757-5857,
fred.kane@corvallis.k12.or.us
Volunteer mentors have
come from the following companies who have
supported them in this effort: Samaritan Health
Services, Hewlett Packard, AVI Biopharma, Central
Willamette Community Credit Union, Citizens Bank,
Edge Design, Gazette-Times,
Oregon State University, and OSU Federal
Credit Union. The program is a partnership of the Corvallis
Public Schools Foundation, Corvallis School
District, Corvallis-Benton Chamber Coalition, and
E3: Employers for Education Excellence.
