Coached by James Torson and his able assistant, "Skeet" O'Connell, Oregon State
track star, the Corvallis High School trackmen officially opened their season in the
contest at Pacific University, April 12. Corvallis won fifth place in the meet. David
Lewis, veteran from last year's squad, lost the high point cup by one point to a Chemawa
lad. Bob Byrd placed second in the javelin and Jack Floyd, fourth. James Edwards
took fourth in the discus and Ralph Keiser tied for fourth in the high jump.

In the Albany track meet, Corvallis was overcome with the score of 42 to 30 by
the Albany Bulldogs. No exceptionally fast times were made because the meet was
held on a very soggy track. Bill Blackledge upheld the reputation of the school very
well when he won the shot put with a distance of 43 feet 6 inches.

Corvallis won the annual district meet on Bell Field quite easily with a total of
49 1/3 points. The boys brought in six firsts and numerous other places, all to the credit
of the school. Six teams were entered from Lincoln, Linn, Polk and Benton counties.
Several meet records of previous years were broken by the determined cinder artists.
David Lewis was the star performer as first man in the 440, 880 and as anchor man on
the victorious Spartan relay team.

The all-state track meet was a battle between Washington of Portland and Grant
of Portland with the former victorious by a very narrow margin. Corvallis placed in a
few heats in the morning, but were greatly outclassed in the finals during the afternoon.
David Lewis, however, again found a place in the finals.
