Books

Antarctica, by Kim Stanley Robinson

Famous for his "Red Mars" Trilogy, Robinson returns to write about another inhospitable land. In the future, Antarctica is caught in a battle between politicians, scientists, and the greens. World resources are dwindling, and politicians are scrambling to find the resources to keep their people alive. They believe that some of these resources can be found under the ice cap of Antarctica, and steps are being taken to begin to extract them. Both the scientists and the greens are heavily opposed to this, but they are taking two different routes to stop it. The scientists are sticking to science, and trying to keep a pristine land by pulling as many strings as they can. The greens resort to sabotage, which is endangering equipment and lives. One politician sends his aide Wade Norton to the continent to investigate the recent ecoterrorist attacks, and Wade discovers much more than wind, ice, and a group of arguing scientists. There are ice tunnels used as subterranean water slides, the 200 club, and a man so unnoticeable that he is called X. There is so much to see and find out, but time runs short as the greens prepare to kick all humans off the continent forever.
