Background

Physics: How Things Work, is a joint effort of four high school students and two coaches. All four students have taken an advanced physics course offered at their high school, Corvallis High School (CHS), and found that they wanted to allow others to enjoy physics. Thus began the idea for Physics: How Things Work.

Among our websites top objectives is to teach people the importance of physics in everyday life. We want to show people how physics is always at work around us. We hope that teachers and students will use the site as an educational tool in the classroom. Although it has been geared towards those in the education setting, we also hope that anyone who wants to learn or understand general concepts of science will enjoy working through the chapters. We also realize that education does not just take place in a book (or on a website, in this case), but comes from learning from others. Thus, we created a message board in which students can post questions or comments related to physics.

This site is an ongoing project that others can contribute to. We hope that it is utilized by people around the world, as their contributions will enhance its value.

David Corliss age: 18
high school: Corvallis High School
contributions to site: I have entered this contest with probably the least amount of computer experience, at least in the aspect of programming. All of my previous experience with computers has pretty much been technical support (and a basic programming class that I took freshman year). So I would say that I contributed my undivided attention (to come out of this with hopefully a good knowledge of HTML) and many long nights in front of the computer.
Silvio Terra age: 18
high school: Corvallis High School
contributions to site: During the construction of Physics: the way things work, I created most of the images are contained within the site. I also contributed some time to the HTML coding.
Andrew Jones age: 18
high school: Corvallis High School
contributions to site: Coming from a computer background that has included web site creation, I was familiar with HTML. However, I wanted to try something different this time, so I began to branch off into Java and CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programming. I also contributed to the coding of many pages and the creation of images. As team leader, I took on the task of keep the site on track and helping out where help was needed.
Paul Hand age: 16
high school: Corvallis High School
contributions to site: I enjoy physics and maintaining web sites. Working on Physics: the way things work seemed like a great way to blend those two passions. I joined the team later in the development of the site, but have been able to contribute by creating some of the images found throughout the chapters. I will also be working on more Java applets to enhance the learning experience.
