#483 Fundamentals of ESL
Prerequisites: Non-native speaker of English eligible for ESL service; student whose education has been interrupted
Credits: 2, Elective
Students will learn strategies for decoding and will read a variety of material at their individual level. They will improve their handwriting (cursive and printing). Students will write and present orally in English. They will become familiar with appropriate and expected behavior in most American classrooms. Students will learn to do basic word processing on a computer. They will be able to receive help on assignments for other classes as appropriate. They will have the opportunity to receive some career guidance.
#482 ESL Skills
Prerequisite: Non-native speaker eligible for ESL Service
Credits: 2, Elective
Students will focus on the development of vocabulary, grammar, and oral fluency in English. They will study and practice activities expected in many American classrooms such as oral presentations, speaking up in class, group projects, and more. They will learn reading and study skills that will be useful in other classes as they progress. Time will be given several times each week for students to receive a teacher's help on homework for other classes.
#484 ESL Humanities
Prerequisite: Non-native speaker of English eligible for ESL Services
Credits: 2 credits of English (first year--second year counts as elective)
2 credits of Global Studies or U.S. History
Students will improve their English through the study of either U.S. History or Global Humanities (alternates each year). They will read a variety of materials including novels, short stories, and nonfiction. They will learn the expectations that American teachers will have for their writing, and they will write in several modes (expository, research, etc.). Emphasis will be placed on development of students' academic/cognitive language and on preparing students for their next year in mainstream classe
