4-H Japanese/Korean exchange program
Conferences, teacher availability
Seniors: All graduating seniors who qualify for a Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) or for a partial CIM in math, science, or language arts will be recognized in this year's graduation program. Seniors who wish to complete the CIM have one last opportunity to take the math problem solving and writing tests, April 16 - 25. Additionally, math and reading multiple-choice tests will be available online throughout April. Please see Mrs. Wahl in the office if you have CIM questions or would like to take one of the tests or complete a CIM work sample. Graduating seniors must complete all CIM work by April 30.
Sophomores: The last day of tenth grade CIM testing this year will be Thursday, April 10. All tenth grade students will take CIM science tests from 7:40 until 9:15 AM. Juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to retake the science test at that time. Ninth graders will participate in an advisory activity.

School-to-Career news:
The annual School-to-Career Fair for juniors will be held at CHS on Thursday, April 10, from 8:00-11:30 AM. Students will practice interviewing skills with community members, have résumés critiqued, complete job applications, hear a motivational speaker, and complete the annual Healthy Teens survey (you will receive more information about this). In preparation for the fair, students should update résumés. Information and assistance with résumés and interviewing skills will be provided as the fair approaches. Students are to dress appropriately for an interview. Hats, t-shirts, and jeans are unacceptable.
The School-to-Career Fair is required for completion of the career education credit. If you are interested in being involved as an interviewer or reviewer of applications, please call Barb Locey at 757-5893
4-H Japanese/Korean exchange program
Do you and your family enjoy other cultures but can’t find the money or time to travel. Consider hosting a Japanese youth (ages 12-18) or an adult chaperone for a month this summer. The focus of the 4-H Japanese Exchange is to build friendships between youth and families of different cultures and provide both with an educational experience that will better prepare them for life in a global society. Students and their chaperones will be in Corvallis from July 26 to August 22, 2003. Japanese youth visit Oregon to experience everyday American family life. The students are not here as tourists, but to live with a family and participate in everyday family activities. Hosting an exchange student is fun and very rewarding.
If your family is interested in hosting a youth (one month) or a chaperone (2 weeks) from Japan this summer please contact Benton County Japanese/Korean Coordinator Christy Warden at 541-847-6030 or 4-H Outreach Agent Maggie Livesay at the Benton County OSU Extension office at 766-6750 by April 10, 2003. For more information visit the Oregon State University website at: http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/programs/projects/global/japanese.htm.
Student messages
If you must contact your student during the school day, please call the Attendance Office at 757-5888.
For the sake of all students, we will interrupt classes only for emergencies. Students will be notified outside of class that non-emergency messages are waiting to be picked up at the attendance office. Thanks for your cooperation. [top] [home]
CHS needs your help in reporting absences.
If your child has been, or will be absent, please call the CHS Attendance Office at 757-5888 as soon as possible. If you do not call before or the day of the absence, the computer will record your child’s absence as unexcused. After 48 hours, absences cannot be excused without the Dean of Student’s approval. Notes are not accepted in place of the phone call.
Absences may be excused at the request of a student’s parent/guardian because of:
illness or disability;
a family emergency;
legal, medical or dental appointments;
religious reasons;
illness in the immediate family requiring the student’s presence; or,
anything the school deems appropriate (up to 5 pre-arranged absences per semester).
Students who are eighteen years old can request to excuse their own absences. Parents will still be notified of absences.
Please encourage your student to attend all classes. But if a class is missed, please clear excused absences in a timely fashion. The message machine (757-5888) is on 24 hours a day for your convenience.
Parking and pick-up tips in school zones
Students and parents should be reminded that some parking areas are off-limits to students, including the front lot, the industrial compound and the area near the home economics wing. Student cars parked improperly or in inappropriate areas will be cited; continued offenses may lead to towing.
Your cooperation in making the area around CHS safe is appreciated. During the early morning and afternoon rush (7:25 – 7:45 AM and 3:05 – 3:25 PM):
Driving through the parking lot in front of the main entrance on 11th Street results in traffic jams and unsafe conditions for students and staff trying to get to the building. Parking in the front lot is limited to staff.
Two good options for dropping off and picking up passengers are 11th Street in front of the school (not in the parking lot!) and Pierce Street.
Remember, the 20 mph speed limit in school zones applies twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year, whenever students are present on school grounds, including sports events, performances, etc. Students do not need to be visible, only present. Students are defined as “anyone under the age of eighteen.” The cost of a violation is expensive – most traffic fines are doubled in school zones!
Also remember that pedestrians in marked crosswalks always have the right-of-way. Drivers who do not yield to pedestrians in crosswalks are in violation of the law – remember this when you see students trying to cross Buchanan!
All students who drive a car to school are required to have a parking permit. If you did not purchase a student activity card this year, your permit will cost $5. Forms are available in the main office. Replacement permits cost $5 for all students. [top] [home]
