Meritorious musicians march onward
CHS’s vocal music program swept the District 11 Solo/Ensemble competition on March 8, with 13 students competing. CHS students won first place in four of the six vocal categories and will be sending five students on the state finals in May. Congratulations to: Jeremy Griffin, 1st place bass; Evan Brown, 1st place baritone; A.J. Parker, 1st place tenor; Julia Park, 1st place soprano, and Anna Seitz, 2nd place soprano.
In addition, four solo instrument musicians played their way from district to the state contest: Daniel Freilich 1st place bassoon, Anna Seitz 1st place oboe, Erin Hunter 2nd place flute, and David Jones 1st alternate French horn. CHS is fortunate to have such talented musicians, and to be able to offer programs that allow them to use and develop those talents.
Mathematicians compute good showing
Results for the 217 CHS students who participated in the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) on February 11 are: AMC 10 – 1st place Erica Zaworski; AMC 12 – 1st place Scott Anderson, 2nd place Nick Alexander, and 3rd place Allison Louthan.
Besides the top three, CHS has eight additional students who scored high enough on the AMC 12 to move to the next level. They are Emily Gable, Michael Swearingin, Nathan Merrill, Jacob Eccles, Emily Clark, Jiheon Kwon, Colin Shear, and Sean Lavelle. Congratulations to all who participated.
Congratulations to Kipp Johnson and Julia Park who competed as part of a joint CHS/CHVS Destination Imagination team at the March 1 regional tournament. The team placed first in their division and earned a chance to compete at the state tournament, Saturday, April 12, at OSU. Destination Imagination is an international team problem solving competition for students in grades kindergarten through 12. "Light" & "mild" or deceptive & deadly?
The Tobacco Industry leads us to believe that cigarettes labeled "light" and "mild" may not be as lethal as regular ones. Believing that could be a deadly mistake, because all tobacco smoke is toxic, and all cigarettes are harmful to your health. And there's nothing "light" about that. Think Again!
"Light." "Mild." Reassuring words. But "the industry's marketing practices deliberately disguise and ignore [the] facts. They imply that 'light' and 'mild' are safe alternatives. Well, the evidence is clearly to the contrary. Labeling cigarettes as 'light' and 'mild' offers smokers a false sense of security based on slick marketing and the misuse of words... Make no mistake, there's nothing 'light' or 'mild' about the lies of Big Tobacco..."
