OSU offers 30+ college courses for high school students via Distance Education. Registration for OSU spring term, which starts March 31 and runs through June 13, is currently underway. Beyond CHS news

Beyond CHS volunteer meeting: Wednesday, April 16, at 12:45 PM, following the parent connection meeting at noon.

Financial aid offers: Many of you are receiving offers of help in obtaining financial aid for college through the mail. You might receive a letter saying you have an appointment with someone, or a telephone call making promises to you about getting scholarships for college. Many of these organizations are out to make money from you (up to more than $1295). Check out these organizations carefully and remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Call Beyond CHS if you have questions.

Advanced Placement (AP) tests:  The $75 balance due on AP tests should be paid in Beyond CHS by April 30. Checks should be made payable to Corvallis High School.

There is no school on May 9 & 12 – but the AP exams will be held anyway, so plan accordingly. Test schedules are set by ETS, and no adjustments are made for those who choose to take long weekend trips. If you have any questions, please call Nancy Shaffer, AP Coordinator, at 757-5711.

Transcripts:  It is strongly recommended that students order all the transcripts needed for college applications at one time. Order transcripts in Beyond CHS well in advance of when you need them! The first two official transcripts are free, after that $2 is charged for each copy (due when the order is placed). There is no charge for unofficial transcripts. The student is responsible for picking up and mailing transcripts.

Military: The Army visits Beyond CHS on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, the Navy visits on second and third Tuesdays of the month, the Marines visits on the second Monday of each month, and the Air Force visits on the second Wednesday of the month. They will be seeing students at the lunch period in Beyond CHS.     [top] [home]

OSU College of Pharmacy has an early admission program for entering freshmen. If your high school junior is interested in pharmacy, there will be an open house on May 15 at the OSU College of Pharmacy, tentatively scheduled for 3:30 PM. Information will be available on their website at pharmacy.oregonstate.edu

All juniors who intend to go to college after high school should be registered by now to take either the SAT or ACT. If you are not yet signed up, come into Beyond CHS right away! Beyond CHS encourages students to apply on line. Also, juniors are encouraged to pick up "Get On Track," a brochure about planning for college, in Beyond CHS. [top] [home]

AYSO Scholarship- For senior HS student who is participating in or has participated within the past year in AYSO Region 149 and has a minimum of 4 years as a volunteer or a player. Award: $300.  Deadline: 4/30/03

Alpha Tau Omega Glazebrook Leadership Scholarship- For an incoming male freshman student to OSU. Award: $1000. Deadline: 6/18/03

Art Institute of Portland- For seniors graduating 2003. Choose the area of study for which you are applying: apparel design, digital media production; graphic design, interior design, media arts & animation; multimedia & web design. You must submit an essay and slides of your work. Award: $5000 - $25,000. Deadline: 5/15/03

Corvallis High School Booster- Must have participated in a sport during 2002-03 and need to type a 5000 word essay on how participating in the sport or an individual coach, has significantly impacted your life. Deadline: 4/14/03

Corvallis Community Calendar- For seniors with a 3.0+ GPA who are Corvallis-area residents. Award: $500. Deadline: 4/01/03

Delta Kappa Gamma, Grant-in-Aid - For a high school senior girl from Linn and Benton County pursuing an education major. Award: $500. Deadline: 5/02/03

Elks National Foundation Vocational Grant- For students pursuing a vocational or technical program. Award: $1000. Deadline: 04/01/03

Public Speaking Scholarship- A speech of 8 to 10 minutes on growth through service. 

Award: $400 Deadline: 4/01/03

Violet Lang Vocal Music Scholarship- One scholarship for vocal and one for instrumental to be used for college tuition to further the study of music. Award: $500. Deadline: 4/01/03 

Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay- An essay on the Holocaust of up to 1200 words. Award: all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., and a scholarship of $1000 to $5000. Deadline: 4/30/03

Kip Smith Young Writer’s Award- For HS Seniors who must submit writing of all types (poetry, prose, drama). Award: $300.  Deadline: 5/09/03

Kiwanis Student of the Month- Every other month during the school year (Oct-May) the Kiwanis Club of Corvallis honors an outstanding senior from each Corvallis high school. To be so honored, the student must demonstrate well-rounded achievement in school and outside activities. Monthly award winners are eligible to be considered for the Student of the Year Award. Knights of Columbus- For Catholic students graduating 2003 and who will attend a vocational, 2 year or 4 year school. Preference given to members of Corvallis Council #1785 and Corvallis St. Mary’s Parish. Award: $250. Deadline: 5/31/03

The Konick Family Scholarship - One scholarship awarded to a graduate of CHS and one to CV. $2,000 for tuition, fees, books and supplies and other related expenses.  [top] [home]

LBCC Program Grants & Scholarships- For full-time new students at LBCC with a declared major. Award: one term tuition. Deadline: 05/01/03; 06/01/03; 09/01/03; 10/01/03 

Mercer Essay- For graduating senior with 3.0 GPA or above. Must write a 500 word essay on “What was the most important day to you at CHS and why?” Deadline: 5/10/03 

National Federation of the Blind of Oregon- For legally blind students planning to pursue post-secondary education in Oregon. Application also available at: www.nfb-or.org Award: $1000-1500. Deadline: 6/01/03

No-Addiction Campaign Essay Contest- For middle school and high school students, each has a different essay. Additional info at: www.NO-Addiction.org Award for high school students: $500 Deadline: 12/31/03

OSEA John Brown Scholarship- At least one parent or legal guardian must be a member of OSEA. Must submit an essay of 600 words on the individual who has had the greatest impact on your life.. Award: $300-500. Deadline: 5/01/03

Oregon Agricultural Education Foundation Memorial- For students studying in an agricultural related major. Award: $750-1500. Deadline: 4/01/03

Oregon Association of Public Accountants- For Oregon students interested in accounting careers who will attend an Oregon institution of higher education. Award: $1000 to $2000. Deadline: 4/15/03

Oregon Nurserymen’s Foundation- For undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in horticulture. Award: fifteen $500-1000 and two $2000. Deadline: 4/01/03

Oregon Youth Memorial Scholarship- Must live within the Oakville Park and Recreation District Boundaries or be active in the Oakville Church. Deadline: 4/15/03

Robert Boone LBCC Nursing Scholarship - $2500 scholarship for a student attending the LBCC nursing program. Deadline 5/10/03

St. Andrews Society- For students born in Scotland or who have a Scottish-born parent or grandparent. Application available at: st.andrews.society.tripod.com  Award: $500-2500. Deadline: 4/15/03

Tau Kappa Epsilon- For incoming male students to OSU for fall 2003. Award: $500, $300 & $200. Deadline: 5/15/03

Wells Fargo CollegeSteps- Students must sign up for the scholarship program and then become eligible for the scholarship at: wellsfargo.com/collegesteps  Winners are chosen at random. Award: $1000. Scholarship drawings dates are monthly with the last one: 5/30/03

American Legion Auxiliary Girls- For junior high school girls, an opportunity to attend the American Legion’s government program at Willamette University. Dates: June 15-21. Cost of program is paid by the American Legion. Deadline: 4/01/03

American Legion Oregon Boys- For junior high school boys, an opportunity to attend the American Legion’s government program at University of Oregon. Dates: June 15-21. Cost of program is by the American Legion. Deadline: 4/01/03 

Presidential Classroom- a seven-day program in Washington, D.C. Estimated cost $1200 in addition to a $125 nonrefundable deposit. Deadline: 4/04/03. Additional information at: www.presidentialclassroom.org

Exchange programs:

American Field Service:  For almost 50 years, AFS has opened doors to international experiences for high school students ages 15-18 in an attempt "to change the world one person at a time" For 2003-2004, AFS offers over 100 exchange programs in 50 countries. In addition to full school year and semester exchanges, there are numerous summer programs involving family home stays, language studies, outdoor adventures, international service, and special interest programs on ecology, politics, economics, artistic traditions, etc.

Many South and Central American countries, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and Japan have varying application deadlines between September and December 1st.  Partial scholarships are available. Rotary Short-Term Youth Exchange- Spend 3 to 4 weeks during the summer exploring a different country. In return you will welcome a “host brother or sister” into your home for 3 to 4 weeks during the summer. Deadline: 4/10/03
