The first round of OSAT math problem solving and writing tests (Certificate of Initial Mastery or CIM assessments) will take place on February 5 and 6. School will start at the regular time. 10th graders will be tested. While the testing is in progress, 9th and 11th graders will participate in career development activities related to their career elective graduation requirement (see School-to-career news on page 2 for details).
Juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to make up or retake the writing and math problem solving tests. Students will be advised if they need to participate in the testing. Classes for seniors not testing will start at 9:25. [top] [home]
Advisor Activities - February 5 and 6 – freshmen and juniors will be involved in career activities each morning from 7:40-9:15. Freshmen will be designing their personal educations plan (PEP), touring Beyond CHS, participating in a Values Survey related to careers, and studying the new Oregon Careers magazine. Juniors will be using the Career Information System (CIS) in computer labs, and receiving information from Beyond CHS about timelines for college applications, testing, and much more. Sophomores will be involved in OSAT testing. Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to re-test during these two days. Seniors not testing are to report at 9:25 for A block.
The Advisor program is our way of meeting the career education credit, which is required for graduation. Attendance is taken each time. If a student misses a session they are expected to make it up.
Sixteen Health Occupations students will be participating in internships the second semester after successfully completing the first semester coursework. The internships consist of 3 rotations. Each rotation is 4 weeks long with students going twice a week for one-and-a-half hours each time. Here is an example of one student’s rotation schedule: Pediatrics, Radiology, and Pharmacy. Many thanks to Samaritan Health Services for being instrumental in making this possible.
The School-to-Career Fair for juniors will be Wednesday, April 9 from 8:00-11:00 (tentative) at Corvallis High School. All juniors from Corvallis High School and Crescent Valley High School will participate in the event which features mock interviews, a motivational speaker, and more. If you are interested in being an interviewer for this event, please call Barb Locey 757-5893 or Jerry Lasater 757-4479.
If your son or daughter has a job and would like to get credit for this experience, please have them come and see Barb Locey in the School-to-Career office – room 206 [home] [top]
Please note that the time of the next Parent Connection meeting has been changed from February 11 because of a conflict with the CHS/CV basketball game. The next Parent Connection meeting will be at 12:45 on February 13 in Beyond CHS (room 209). Join us for a discussion of CHS affairs with Principal Jay Conroy. Our spring evening meeting will be held in March. We are working on an interesting and informative program for that meeting. The date will be announced in the next newsletter. We look forward to seeing lots of you at both meetings. [home] [top]
Calling volunteers: Help needed
Parents,
With the school budget at an all time low, parent volunteer help is needed more than ever. These are some of the needs we have currently:
1. Help in the science labs. One does not have to like science or be a scientist to help here. We need people to help clean up, set up labs and wash beakers. We could use you once a week or once a month.
2. Help tutoring students. This would be a weekly commitment during D Block 1:35-3:10 PM.
3. Help in the main office. This involves a two hour commitment once a week answering phones and greeting visitors and students.
4. Help in the attendance office. This would be especially helpful if you could volunteer during lunchtime.
If you could help with any of these needs, please give me a call at 753-9095 or email me at jeffmull@attbi.com. Thanks for caring about CHS! Pam Mull Volunteer Coordinator
CHS will be hosting 20 Japanese students from Nichidai High School March 29-April 4. We need four more host families. The students will arrive in Corvallis the afternoon of March 29 and depart the morning of April 4. The students will be attending school during the week. The program with Nichidai students has been well received in the past. This is a great opportunity to share our culture with students from Japan. Families willing to host or needing further information, please contact Pam Mull, CHS Parent Volunteer Coordinator, at 753-9095 or Linda Alderman in the main office.
An Albertsons “partner’s card” lets you donate 5% of purchases to CHS (up to $1800 per quarter). The cards are available in Beyond CHS and the main office. When you purchase groceries at Albertsons, just hand the clerk your partner’s card to scan. It's that simple to support students at CHS.
If you must contact your student during the school day, please call the Attendance Office at 757-5888.
For the sake of all students, we will interrupt classes only for emergencies. Students will be notified outside of class that non-emergency messages are waiting to be picked up at the attendance office. Thanks for your cooperation. [top] [home]
CHS needs your help in reporting absences.
If your child has been, or will be absent, please call the CHS Attendance Office at 757-5888 as soon as possible. If you do not call before or the day of the absence, the computer will record your child’s absence as unexcused. After 48 hours, absences cannot be excused without the Dean of Student’s approval. Notes are not accepted in place of the phone call.
Absences may be excused at the request of a student’s parent/guardian because of:
illness or disability;
a family emergency;
legal, medical or dental appointments;
religious reasons;
illness in the immediate family requiring the student’s presence; or,
anything the school deems appropriate (up to 5 pre-arranged absences per semester).
Students who are eighteen years old can request to excuse their own absences. Parents will still be notified of absences.
Please encourage your student to attend all classes. But if a class is missed, please clear excused absences in a timely fashion. The message machine (757-5888) is on 24 hours a day for your convenience.
Parking and pick-up tips in school zones
Students and parents should be reminded that some parking areas are off-limits to students, including the front lot, the industrial compound and the area near the home economics wing. Student cars parked improperly or in inappropriate areas will be cited; continued offenses may lead to towing.
Your cooperation in making the area around CHS safe is appreciated. During the early morning and afternoon rush (7:25 – 7:45 AM and 3:05 – 3:25 PM):
Driving through the parking lot in front of the main entrance on 11th Street results in traffic jams and unsafe conditions for students and staff trying to get to the building. Parking in the front lot is limited to staff.
Two good options for dropping off and picking up passengers are 11th Street in front of the school (not in the parking lot!) and Pierce Street.
Remember, the 20 mph speed limit in school zones applies twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year, whenever students are present on school grounds, including sports events, performances, etc. Students do not need to be visible, only present. Students are defined as “anyone under the age of eighteen.” The cost of a violation is expensive – most traffic fines are doubled in school zones!
Also remember that pedestrians in marked crosswalks always have the right-of-way. Drivers who do not yield to pedestrians in crosswalks are in violation of the law – remember this when you see students trying to cross Buchanan!
All students who drive a car to school are required to have a parking permit. If you did not purchase a student activity card this year, your permit will cost $5. Forms are available in the main office. Replacement permits cost $5 for all students. [top] [home]
