a tradition of
excellence; preparation for the future September
2002
by Jay Conroy, Principal,
Corvallis High School
Greetings and welcome back to school,
What does it take to get school off to a great start?? For CHS, the answer is simple. Put the process in the hands of very competent, dedicated staff members and the massive task gets done smoothly and effectively with – new teachers being hired and oriented; textbooks ordered and materials on shelves; fall sports well underway; students placed in classes; fees collected; yearbooks purchased; paperwork filed, and on and on, so that finally, our kids can come to class, start to explore, wonder and learn still more.
My huge gratitude to the staff members who do this huge job with a very positive attitude that led one visitor looking to register her student to remark, “I have never been around such a warm, caring group of people that seem to genuinely care about my child.”
Key thoughts for you as school starts –
Our staff is largely intact with new faces in only a few spots – Chris Mooney in math; Karen Luchessa (part-time from CV) in science; Bonnie Gregg (part-time from Highland View) in art; Charlyn Ellis (from CV) in English. These teachers are all top-notch instructors who will help our students to learn. Other new faces Laurie Corliss, bookroom coordinator, and Judi Welever, library assistant.
Morale is concerned, but upbeat. Our teachers and classified workers are all approaching the year with attitudes that don’t include “woe-is-me(us),” but instead are genuinely optimistic about the quality of students they get to work with on a daily basis.
The “New CHS Building-Design Group” has spent hundreds of hours this past four months listening to community members, staff, parents and students, working with architects and the community, and providing professional, responsible input to shape the design of a new high school building. Their work has been exceptional, thorough and very thoughtful. Please become informed and vote in the upcoming bond election.
College Planning Night is 7:00 PM on September 23 at LaSells. Fall Open House is September 25, and is a great opportunity to hear about the classes your student is taking and to get to know the teachers at CHS. Additionally, we will have our first Parent Connection meeting October 21, at 7:00 PM in the faculty dining room. That meeting will focus on two topics – the new building design and an introductory open discussion about how we view the roles for which we are each responsible in providing our students with an exceptional opportunity to learn (staff, building administration, district administration, school board, parents and students are all fair game).
Finally,
we will be working hard with you and your students to continue to give
them the best possible opportunity to learn. Thank you for your efforts. Please
give us your feedback or call if you have questions.
Orientation for parents of 9th grade & transfer students
There will be a meeting for parents of all new students (ninth graders and transfer students) on Tuesday, September 3, at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria. This will be a time for staff and parents to preview the year, discuss the extensive opportunities at CHS, and share information. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.
Open House at CHS will be held on Wednesday, September 25. At 6:30 PM schedules will be available in the lobby. At 6:45 Principal Jay Conroy will briefly welcome parents and guardians in the auditorium. At 7:05 those attending will meet in their student’s first period classroom. The evening will end around 8:45. Plan to attend and learn more about your child's education.
Conferences will be held at the end of October. Details will be in the October newsletter.
