Guidelines for student visitors
Ø Visitation is not allowed if the guest student lives within 60 miles of Corvallis (Valley League principal's agreement).
Ø The guest must be of high school age and a "student in good standing" at their high school.
Ø A "Visitor's Request Form" must be completed by the host student at least 24 hours prior to the visit (available in the main office).
Ø Any violation of school guidelines during the visit may result in both students being sent home.
Parents, please either fill out important health information on your student’s registration sheet...adding pertinent information on a separate sheet of paper is fine...or contact Cindy Gulledge at 757-5910 to go over information or steps to be taken in an emergency. Any student who needs to take prescription medicine at school has to have a medicine permission form on file at school. The medicine should be brought to school where it will be kept in a locked cabinet. High school students are allowed to bring over the counter pain relief or allergy medicine without written permission. They MAY NOT, however, share this medicine. Inhalers should be kept with the student; although a permission form should be on file in the health room.
Destination ImagiNation (DI), sponsored by Corvallis 509J Destination Imagination Organization, is a creative problem-solving program for students in grades kindergarten through 12. Imagine a program where kids have FUN learning problem-solving skills, construction techniques, set and costume design, script writing, and improvisation. This is DI! Students work in teams to create and perform a solution to one of five challenges. Each challenge blends a different mix of skills - some are more technical and others are more theatrical in nature. Teams also perform an instant challenge, given to them with just minutes to prepare. Crazy? Yes! Fun? You bet!
How do teams form? Parents of interested students usually start the ball rolling. Teams of 5 to 7 students are grouped by age or grade (k-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12). While teams are usually students from the same school, they can also be friends or neighbors. Teams need an adult team manager who facilitates the meetings (training and materials are included with registration). The registration costs are $50 per student ( $35 for the second student in a family). Teams form in October and work some in the fall, but January and February are busiest as teams prepare for the March regional tournament. Higher scoring teams progress to the state tournament at Oregon State University in April.
Want to learn more? In Corvallis an Information Night and Registration will be held October 7th at 7 PM at the Cheldelin Middle School cafeteria. For lots of information about the program and its value, look at the national web site at: www.destinationimagination.org. The Oregon website at www.oregondi.org lists information and training dates, plus local contact information. Or call Corvallis coordinator Karen Anderson 541/754-3811.
Library volunteer tea and orientation
September 9, Tuesday, 2:15 – 3:15 PM
The library is supported by many volunteers who help process new books, repair old books, assist with inventory, and work on a variety of special projects. This year the library will be responsible for the textbooks as well. Staff reductions make the need for volunteers even greater in the library and textbook room. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to see the students in action working on their projects in the library. You also have the privilege of selecting books to check out for your own reading pleasure.
All past library volunteers are invited and we hope to meet many new people at this get-together. No experience is required! The orientation will begin at 2:30 PM. Please join us. If you have any questions contact Mary-Dean at 757-5900.
Volunteers are greatly appreciated at CHS. If you are willing to volunteer some time and energy to your child’s school, please register with the CHS parent volunteer coordinator. The coordinator will inform you of volunteer opportunities – often desperately needed help – via email. We are all busy people, but this method allows volunteers to keep up-to-date on requests for help. You need only respond to requests that fit into your schedule.
With school funding in the miserable state it is, volunteers are needed more than ever. CHS needs parents for field trips, tutoring, parent teacher conferences, and helping in the attendance and main office. Parents help with sporting events, the band, in the science lab, bookroom, and in the ESL classrooms. Beyond CHS is a popular place to volunteer. Please register by calling the main office 757-5871.
The severe cuts in budget have reduced what resources the library can purchase. We are drastically reducing our magazine subscriptions from about thirty-eight titles to six. We hope that with a few contributions that we will still be able to provide magazines which are useful and enjoyable for the students during their independent times. There are a few different choices in making donations and we have some suggestions.
Please call the library at 757-5900 if you are interested in making a donation. Thank you.
Now you can use the web to find out if you can get help from Food Stamps and other programs that offer: food, housing, health insurance, tax credits, cash assistance for families with children. Visit www.oregonhelps.org
