Colleges visiting Beyond CHS: New college visits are added all the time, have your student check Beyond CHS. Please note that students must sign up if they intend to visit. Sometimes a college calls ahead to see if any students have signed up. If no students have signed up, the college representative may cancel the visit. There is a purple book that students need to register in and then when they come to the visit, they will be excused from classes.
Under federal law, virtually all men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. However, the Selective Service System now accepts early submission of registration information by 17-year-old men. The Agency holds their registration information and automatically enters their data into the system when they turn 18. The easiest way to register is on-line at www.sss.gov [top] [home]
A big thank you to the proctors who helped with the PSAT administration on Saturday, October 18. A record 251 students sat for the PSAT. Scores should be returned to CHS by the third week of December and will be given back to the students at that time. Students will be informed by an announcements that there is a meeting during the lunch hour to receive scores from their counselors.

I highly recommend that students and parents go to Oregon State (it's right here in town) and take their campus tour. It really doesn't matter if you are interested in Oregon State or not. What it does is get you on a campus, you will hear what OSU has to offer, you will see the facilities, etc. Then when you go to another campus, say Willamette or UO, you will be able to compare, ask more specific questions, look at the facilities differently, etc. You will also learn from other parents and students on the tour. OSU campus tours are offered M,T,Th,F from 9-4 and W from 9-3. They are offered every hour on the hour and housing tours are offered at 11:00 and 1:00. Their number is 737-2626. They also offer Saturday visits starting at 10:00, on February 22, March 15, April 26 and May 17. Beaver Open House day is Saturday, November 8. Really don't want to take a campus tour of OSU? - then call the individual colleges and universities that interest you and arrange for a visit. [top] [home]
The Portland National College Fair will be held at the Oregon Convention Center, Friday, November 7 from 9-1:00 PM. and Saturday, November 8 from 9-1:00 PM. This is an excellent opportunity for sophomores and juniors to meet with representatives of colleges throughout the United States. For a listing of colleges go to www.nacac.com
UO School of Music scholarship auditions for Fall 2004 will be held at the UO School of Music, February 7-8, 2004. To schedule your audition, call:(541) 346-1164 or e-mail: audition@oregon.uoregon.edu. More than $200,000 is awarded annually in music scholarships. [top] [home]
An information session for Bucknell University, Emory University, University of Richmond, and Washington and Lee University will be at Saint Mary's Academy on Monday, November 10 from 7-9 PM. The address is : Saint Mary's Academy, Performing Arts Center, 1615 SW 5th Avenue, Portland.
Seniors and parents need to help each other through the college application process. It would be great if all applications could be turned in by November 1. Watch deadline dates. Remember, early decision is binding; early action, early notification or just getting your application in early is non-binding. Counselors and teachers need at least three weeks to write a letter of recommendation, please don't ask for a letter if you don't need one. [top] [home]

Plan out college admission tests: It is usually a mistake to wait until the beginning of the senior year to take standardized tests required for college admission (ACT, SAT and SAT II). A little time spent planning out the right time to schedule these tests is well spent. If you are aiming for a top level or private school, the SAT II may be required. Some students should take SAT II subject tests as early as the freshman or sophomore year. For advice on when or if you should take a test, inquire at Beyond CHS. [top] [home]
