Jon Krakauer, acclaimed writer and seasoned mountaineer, graduated from Corvallis High School in 1972.  Since then he has published three books and countless articles, in such publications as The American Alpine Journal, Playboy, Outside, and Smithsonian.

In January 2002, the writer agreed to answer some questions regarding his time at CHS, writing, and climbing.  This page is mainly composed of that interview, as well as a brief bio and some links to other Krakauer related articles included below.

BRIEF BIO:

Krakauer was born in Brookline Massachusetts in 1954.  His family moved to Corvallis when he was 2.  After graduating from CHS in 1972 he attended Hampshire College, in Amherst, Massachusetts.

He published his first piece in The American Alpine Journal, in 1975.  Krakauer went on to write many magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, but did not manage to quit his carpentry job until 1983.  His first book was EIGER DREAMS (1990), a collection of articles written for Outside and Smithsonian.  The second book was INTO THE WILD (1996), the non-fictional chronicles of Chris McCandless, who ventured into the Alaskan wilderness to seek liberation and never returned.

Krakauer's third book, INTO THIN AIR (1997), is the author's most critically acclaimed and controversial.  It deals with the tragic events on Mt. Everest in 1996, and it's success has propelled him to national fame.

Mr. Krakauer now lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife, Linda, and is reportedly researching a project much unlike his previous work.
