The Interrogative Pronouns WER/WEN/WAS?
The interrogative pronouns (question word) WER? (who) is used to refer to people if they are the grammatical subject of the sentence; WEN? (whom) is used to refer to people if they are the direct object in the sentence.

The interrogative pronoun (question word) WAS? (what) is used to refer to things/objects. It does not matter if these things/objects take the position of the subject or direct object.
