Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive Verbs reflect the action of the verb back upon the subject of the sentence.. Many are related to the body, but others may leave you wondering how this has anything to do with reflecting the action back upon the subject.

Some verbs may be both reflexive and non-reflexive, depending on the meaning of the sentence.

Ich kaufe ein Haus I am buying a house.

Ich kaufe mir ein Haus I am buying myself a house.

Ich wasche das Auto. I am washing the car.

Ich wasche mich. I am washing (myself).

The reflexive pronoun is placed immediately after the verb in most cases.

Ich wasche mich.

Er putzt sich die Zähne.

Wir müssen uns rasieren.

Wir haben uns auf Deutsch unterhalten.

The Dative Case Reflexive Pronouns are used when the verb takes a direct object other than the reflexive pronoun itself – when more specific details are given. Some texts indicate that certain verbs are dative reflexive verbs, and others are accusative reflexive verbs. While this may be true, it is easier to remember the explanation above.

Ich wasche mich. Ich wasche mir das Gesicht.
