Reflexive verbs reflect the action of the verb back on the subject (the person(s) who commit the action). They are marked by the use of the reflexive pronoun sich in front of the verb. In ictionaries this often appears as a simple "s." (s. erinnern - to remember).

Reflexive verbs require the use of a reflexive pronoun that is related to the subject of the sentence. In sentences which do not involve a direct object these reflexive pronouns are:

In declarative statements the reflexive pronoun follows the verb: Ich halte mich fit.

In questions the reflexive pronoun follows the subject: Freust du dich auf die Party?

In commands the reflixive pronoun follows the verb: Haltet euch fit! But Halten Sie sich fit!

In sentences with modal verbs the reflexive pronoun follows the modal verb: Ich kann mich nicht erinnern.

In the conversational past tense the reflexive pronoun follows the helping verb:
