CVPO Business

Minutes:  The minutes of the 4/5/07 meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:  Available funds of $1,205.58 were reported.  Disbursements of $1,918.60 were made for the second semester teacher grants.  Income of $16.50 from the “Cartridges for Kids” fundraiser was reported.  An additional $400, which was budgeted but unspent for the two conference dinners, was spent to fund the math department grant request for 4 USB remote presenters.

Correspondence:  Thank you cards and e-mails were received from several individuals and groups that received CVPO grant funds recently, including the world languages dept., the Link Crew program, Brooke Hallinan, Heather Zimmers for the math dept., and the students, staff, volunteers, and peer tutors of the learning lab.

Announcements:  The following communications from the district were circulated:

1.        Public testimony regarding the budget will be taken at the May 21 meeting.  The Budget Committee will deliberate at its May 29 meeting and may choose to approve tax levies and forward the budget to the school board.  More information regarding the budget can be found at:

http://www.csd509j.net/district_information/departments_and_services/business_services/budget.html

2.  Update on the 509J Community Visioning Process.  For more information, go to:

3.   Host families are needed for an Asian elementary teaching assistant.  For more information, e-mail alex@vincent-hill.com.

Volunteer News:  From Rosalind Blair, “I am the coordinator for the gift wrap fundraiser for the senior all night party for this year's class and now need to find a replacement parent for that.  The gift wrap part of it starts this summer and ends in November and so I need to have contact info for the new incoming person to pass along to the Sally Foster representative in the next few weeks for planning of sale dates etc.”  Contact Rosalind at rbildfell@comcast.net.

Look for an upcoming request from the library for helpers during June textbook return.  This is a big multi-day job and many volunteers are appreciated.

Food donations were requested for the upcoming Career Fair to be held on Wednesday, May 23rd in the cafeteria from 9 a.m. -12 noon.  Anyone who would like to provide refreshments for the 50 community members who will be conducting mock interview for our students please reply to this e-mail.  Muffins, bagels, fruit trays, and paper products were requested.

Officers and Chairs for Next Year:  Two key positions will be open in the year after next, so this is an ideal time for new volunteers to start learning these roles alongside the current officeholders.  Sue Johnson (745-5372) will coordinate summer registration for the last time this August and has asked for a co-coordinator.  Roberta Lundeberg (745-5321) will serve as president of the CVPO until June 2008 and has asked for a co-president for the ’07-’08 school year.  Please contact Sue or Roberta for more information.

Principal Topics

Art Fest:  Will be held on Wednesday, May 30th during D block.  This annual event is a showcase of the arts at CVHS.  Keith Moses is coordinating the event this year and parents are welcome to attend.  In the evening of the 30th, there will be an orchestra concert at CV, but no other evening Art Fest events are planned.

Staffing:  Cherie announced that Ayesha Freeman will serve as Assistant Principal next year.  She is from Mt. View HS in Vancouver and is a former history teacher.

Michael Helle and Ted Calcaterra have been hired as permanent staff members (from temporary status).  The hiring process is on-going for teachers in the math, science, social studies, language arts, and world language departments.  Cherie expects those appointments to be made by the end of May.

Course Projections:  Due to the passage of the local option levy, academic class size projections are down significantly.  Average class sizes for all grades next year are:

English:  26 students

Math:  26 students

Science:  26 students

Social Studies:  29 students

This year all the core academic classes have class size averages in the 30’s.

Other highlights:

1.  The Freshman Focus class will have 3 sections and 78 total students.

2.  The Journalism class will have 25 students and this class will publish the school newspaper.

3.  Marine Science will have two sections.

4.  There will be two sections each of year-long algebra and geometry.

Site Council School Improvement Plan (SIP):  Cherie reviewed the document, “Crescent Valley High School Improvement Goals, 2006-2009,” which can be found soon on the CVHS website at:

http://www.csd509j.net/cvhs/

Communication Plan:  Roberta polled the parents present on how they preferred to receive information from the school and overwhelmingly e-mail was preferred.  The district and PTA/PTO leaders will be working on a district-wide communication plan and input from parents is appreciated.

Student Teaching and Classroom Management:  Sparked by a parent question, discussion was held on this topic.  Parents wanted to know what requirements and structures were in place when student teachers are teaching at CV.  Cherie stated that CV hosts student teachers from several colleges and universities, and that these programs have different requirements and schedules, but that the classroom teacher has the ultimate responsible for management of the class.
