CVPO Business

Minutes: The minutes of the 10/09/08 meeting were approved with the addition of this paragraph:

Teacher Grants: The grant committee proposed funding all nine requests that were submitted for a total of $2,682. Of this total, $1000 will come from a donation made through the Foundation, and the remainder of the funding ($1682) will come     from the CVPO account; this is $318 less than the group was willing to authorize for this first grant period, but no other requests were received. The attached spreadsheet has detailed information about the grants. The low number of requests may be due to timing. Grant proposals to the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation were due at the same time and these are generally larger. The grant committee’s proposal was approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Available funds of $3,306.13 were reported today, which reflects income of $45.98 from dues and E-Scrip, and disbursements of $20 for Staff Breakfast and $2,182.00 for Teacher Grants.  In regard to the Teacher Grants,  it was discovered after the October CVPO meeting that only $500 in donations received by the Foundation/CV Excellence was designated for the teacher grants.  (Not $1000, as previously reported.)  In order to make the full amount of money available to the teachers as voted by the membership, the Executive Committee voted to increase CVPO funding for this grant period from $1682 to $2182, to make up the difference.

CVPO Office openings: Volunteers needed for the following positions –, Corresponding Secretary, Volunteer Coordinator Assistant. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions regarding these positions, please contact Nanette Armstrong by e-mail at: nyarmstrong@comcast.net

Conference Dinner: Everything went well at the Conference Dinner. Plenty of salads and desserts were provided by parent volunteers. The main course for the dinner was a very generous donation from Susan McDonald and her husband Kurt Black and was catered by Evergreen Restaurant. Conference Dinner Coordinator Lynn Entrikin said everything went smoothly the food was great and set up/clean up was easy.

CV Excellence Campaign: The campaign was started on October 27 and will end on November 26. Brochures are available at the front desk in the main office lobby as well as online at:

Daytime Parent Coffee Topics

Budget: Due to the current fiscal climate, there are proposed cuts in State funding to the school district as follows:

4.7 million (10%) general fund

1.4 million school improvement fund

There are other (rainy day/emergency) funds which can be tapped to help ease these cuts, and each school in the district is looking for ways to cut back without resorting to layoffs or cuts in school days. We will know further how much the final cuts will be in January 2009.

Diversity Survey: The first CV Diversity Survey results will be available before Winter Break.

District Wide Steering Committee volunteer opening: The purpose of the District Wide Steering Committee is to determine what is needed at our schools to meet graduation requirements. A CV parent volunteer is needed for this committee. The time requirement is 2 hours on one afternoon and a full day – dates to be determined. If interested, contact Principal Cherie Stroud by e-mail at cherie.stroud@corvallis.k12.or.us or by phone: (541) 757-5801.

Evening Principal’s Coffee
Thursday Nov. 13, 2008 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Attendance: Principal Cherie Stroud with 5 parents representing 4 families.

Introductions were made. In a casual setting, Cherie invited parents to discuss what was on their mind. Highlights include: Sports—do we really need so many sports clothes? The new OSAA sportsmanship rules: "Just how do we cheer on our students?". Grandstands—getting estimates, then bids. Hope to have them completed by the fall. They’ll be on the west side of the field with a cover to be added in the future. Cherie said teacher conferences were well attended but one parent thought a timer might be helpful to alert parents of the 10- minute time limit. On the subject of class bells, Cherie has talked to many students about the large number of tardies, especially after lunch. Bells will begin after lunch next week to announce students to go to class. Alcohol a problem on campus?—no. Budget—the school budget runs on a biannual cycle. A new budget will begin in the fall ’09 with another forecast in January on expected budget cuts. Enrollment is down. We expected 1078 students and we have 1040.

Cherie says she is happy with the students and the good environment at CV. She is thrilled with her assistant principals. She feels each department works well as a whole and collaboratively with other departments. Veteran teachers help new teachers.

The session ended with the questions: what do you like about CV? And what would you change if you could? A variety of answers: We like Cherie Stroud and her availability to students and parents! We like the teachers, our students have graduated and done well in college. On the flip side: we’d take away all money problems if possible, equality in sports teams, both Corvallis schools being truly equal.

Future requests: Parents would like to see these evening principal meetings on a quarterly basis and would like all sports meetings to be posted on the CV list-serve. No date posted on the next evening meeting. Stay tuned.
