Need a Teacher or Counselor letter of Recommendation?

November 30, 2000

Teacher and counselor recommendations are important aspects of many application materials. Keeping this in mind, carefully consider the teachers whom you select to complete your recommendations.

1. Complete a personal profile/activity sheet on yourself and make copies so you can give them to anyone you ask for a recommendation.

2. When you have decided which teachers you will ask to write your recommendations, include with your profile/activity sheet a note telling the teacher the exact date the recommendation is due to the college or scholarship committee.

3. If the recommendation is on a special form be sure that YOU have filled out all applicable sections that you need to complete before delivering it to the teacher.

4. Provide the teacher with a stamped and properly addressed envelope for mailing the recommendation.

5. On most teacher/counselor recommendation forms you will be asked whether you waive your right to view the recommendation. It is generally better to indicate "yes" so admissions officers know that teachers' or counselors' comments are completely candid.

6. Deliver the recommendation personally to the teacher along with information about yourself. DO NOT leave it on a desk, in the teacher's mailbox or depend on someone else to deliver it for you.

7. Give plenty of notice! TWO WEEKS is the minimum acceptable time period to give a teacher or counselor

8. It is appropriate to follow up a teacher recommendation with a thank you note. They have given you a gift!

9. Any students who have transferred during high school may want to request letters of recommendations from teachers and counselors from your former high school.

Some applications (particularly scholarship applications) may ask for a photograph. Order a sufficient number of pictures with that thought in mind.

Hard work and preparedness pays off.
