Plans
for the Summer Already?
January
might seem pretty early to start planning for your vacation, but
if you wait too long the best opportunities will be gone. Now
that you're a sophomore, you might have a better idea than last
year of what you really want to do. You might have joined a club
that gave you some new experience -- maybe you're working on the
school paper, or you've joined DECA. Things like this can point
you toward internships. Ask your adviser! He or she might know
of some local opportunities, or employers looking for interns.
You can also look for potential internships on the Internet.
Of course, you don't have to do an internship over the summer.
You can get a job, go to a summer program or camp, or take
classes at your school or another local school. Classes or work
in your field of interest can be just as noteworthy as an
internship. Just keep in mind that the more solid experience you
have, the better chances you will have to impress admissions
officers or future employers.
Don't forget about having some fun! Many programs do not last
the whole summer, and if you're an intern you're likely to have
weekends off. It is vacation, after all!
