THURSDAY, 3/11/10
Congratulations to everyone for a fine showing at CWOSE last weekend!
All students who were awarded the opportunity to attend NWSE in Portland on Friday 4/3/10 must do the following:
Complete a new Parent Permission Form for this specific fair--we want to make sure parents are aware of this trip to Portland on Friday 4/2/10.
Complete the rider/driver permission forms below if you plan on driving yourself, other students, or riding with other students to Portland. Again, because this is in Portland, we ask that you complete new permission slips--a trip to Portland is substantially different than one to Albany and we need to make sure parents are fully aware of this difference.
Mr. Kirsch must have a revised poster by Monday, March 29th if you wish to have CV print a new one for you. You may want to make corrections or change things based on discussions with judges at CWOSE. Monday is the absolute last day to get these turned in to be printed. Period.
With the number of students going, we could do this trip without a bus if a few parents can help drive us up to Portland. If your parents would like to volunteer to help with transportation to Portland, please let Mr. Kanter know by Wednesday, March 17th.
THURSDAY, 3/4/10
We now have a more up to date schedule of events for the day that is a little bit more complete than what is currently on the CWOSE Home Page. You should take a look at this schedule to see what you are expected to do.
The science fair is at LBCC and there is a map to the campus on the schedule of events above. When you are there, you should go the the Calapooia Center on the southern side of the campus. All events for the day will be in that building or the ones immediately surrounding it. Map of LBCC
During the judging time, you will have assigned times to be by your poster. Make sure you are there at the times scheduled because the judges will want to talk to you and ask you questions. Use this Judging Schedule to find when you are expected to be standing by your poster.
During the fair, you will have an assignment to complete. During the time that you are not required to be at your own poster, you need to walk around to six other posters (at least three must be from students not from CV) and write down:
Three things that they did well. What about the project and/or presentation was good?
Three things that could be improved.
Write down your assignment on a sheet of paper that is to be turned in on Monday/Tuesday of next week. Write in complete sentences and do not give one word or one phrase answers.
Some things to remember about transportation:
If you are driving with another student, you and the student driving need to have the correct permission slips in to us or else we will not be able to ok your leaving the fair with another student.
If you are riding to and from the fair with another student's parents/guardian, we will need a note from your parents that let us know that they are fine with that. If you do not have a note, we cannot let you go with them.
If you are riding on the bus with us or with your own parent/guardian you do not need to do anything.
When you get to the fair you will need to check in with your teacher. When you leave at the end of the day...if you are not riding on the bus you MUST check out with your teacher before you go!
Please make sure you have read all of the information below!
TUESDAY, 2/23/10
There will be meeting next Thursday 3/4 during lunch in F-20 to go over last minute details and answer questions. Attendance is mandatory for everyone in your group.
The schedule of events is up on the CWOSE Home Page. You should peruse through the schedule to make sure you know what the day will be like. They don't have specifics posted yet but there are usually activities for students (movies, games, etc.) during the down times like judge deliberations.
There will likely be a map of LBCC campus up soon that will show where the science fair will be held. We will post that information as soon as we have it.
Students riding on the bus to LBCC with us on should be at the school by 6:30 AM. We will meet in, and leave from, the parking lot by the science wing. The bus will be pulling out of the parking lot at 7:00 AM. The awards ceremony is scheduled from 5:00PM - 7:00 PM and we will head back after that is over and we get our gear cleaned up and get on the bus. We should be back to the school by 8:00 PM.
At some point in the next week we expect to hear from the fair director about incomplete paperwork problems. If it is incomplete at this point, your project is still not approved by ISEF. It is your responsibility to ensure your group gets approved. If we get them, we will provide email addresses and fax numbers for sending in corrected forms...if not, bring corrected forms to the fair. If you fail to complete your paperwork and you get disqualified you will not be able to earn honors credit for your class. No one (including your teacher) is correcting your paperwork for you. That said, your teacher will answer whatever questions you may have--please ask!
If you are handling your own transportation, pleas be on site at the fair no later than 7:15 AM.
Dress should be business causal.
Students--plan to spend the entire day at the fair including the awards ceremony at the end.
DO NOT DAMAGE YOUR POSTERS AFTER THE FAIR!!! We want to bring all of the posters back to CV so that they can be mounted and displayed throughout the building. Please keep this in mind when you mount them to your board.
Students are asked to correct their final papers and bring a clean copy with them to the fair.
Students will be given their original paperwork the morning of the fair. In the past you have needed these.
WEDNESDAY, 2/10/10
A number of students have asked about display regulations to help them in putting their posters together. The regulations for the display at the fair (which can be more than just your poster) are at http://nwse.org/display.
Just a reminder from the meeting about your posters. There is a section in the guidelines that refers to your PowerPoint "presentation." That is something that we have done in years past but are not doing this year. So...there is no need to complete a set of slides for presenting your research. You will just need to make the one large slide that will be printed as your poster.
FRIDAY, 2/05/10
REMINDER: THERE IS A LUNCH MEETING ON MONDAY 2/08/10 IN F-20 TO DISCUSS PAPERWORK AND FINAL DETIALS FOR THE SCIENCE FAIR.
All Forms (both Paperwork and online forms) must be returned to Ms. Granados by Friday, 2/12/10. This is the same day that your posters are due to your teacher in electronic format. Make certain that ALL dates are filled out correctly and that all required signatures are on your forms before they are turned in to us. We will not be able to check your forms again before they are due to the fair officials. If you have any questions, come in and ask your teacher BEFORE Friday.
A checklist for your paperwork is linked HERE. You should use it to make sure you have the required paperwork and you should have your forms in the folder in the same order as they appear on the checklist. Print out the checklist and check things off as you go. Turn in the checklist to your teacher and your forms to Ms. Granados.
All paper forms need to be copied. You can do this in the library for a small fee if you need to. Your folder should include both the originals and copied forms in easily distinguishable stacks so that we can easily take the copied forms to send into the fair.
A fee of $15.00 is due on Friday with your forms. This will cover registration for the fair and will also cover some of the costs that we incur for printing the posters that you will use to present at the fair.
FRIDAY, 1/29/10
Notes from Wednesday's lunch meeting:
Paperwork folders that were passed out during the meeting need to be checked to make sure they are complete and have all necessary signatures and dates. You should use the forms wizard website (linked above) to check your final project paperwork requirements. Folders need to be turned back in on Monday, 2/1 and we will submit them to the fair director for you. Paperwork folders returned late will be the group's responsibility to submit to the fair. Talk to your teacher for details.
A quick reminder that posters are due in electronic format on 2/12.
FRIDAY, 1/15/10
Now that your final paper is done and turned in it is time to start thinking about what comes next. You will want to collect more data and continue to make adjustments to your final report so that you can have an even more impressive project to present to the science fair judges in March. Posters for the science fair are the next thing you want to think about putting together. An electronic copy of your poster is due on Wednesday, 2/10/10. The instructions for making your poster using PowerPoint are linked here. Please make sure you follow the directions completely. If you do not, you may have to do all of your work over again.
MONDAY, 1/11/10
The Final Paper is due this coming Friday. While you are doing your data analysis, you will likely find it useful to use excel to produce charts and tables of your data. The program will also do statistical calculations for you that may help you in writing up your report. This Statistical Considerations document will help guide you through some of those features.
WEDNESDAY, 12/8/09
Now that you have turned in your final proposal, you need to start thinking about how you are going to get to your end product. The Final Report Guidelines are already posted below and should be used to write up your final paper that is due in January. The next deadline on the calendar is 12/18 when you should have your data collection completed. If you need to, you should keep collecting data over the break. Final Papers are due Friday 1/15 for everyone. You are able to keep collecting data even after your final paper has been turned in to add to your analysis that will be presented at the science fair.
FRIDAY, 11/20/09
The next assignment for you to turn in is the Formal Proposal. It is due on December 7th or 8th. Remember that late work only earns partial credit even if it is just a day late. You will need to make corrections to your proposal outline and fill in any missing information that wasn't ready when the outline was turned in. This proposal should be completely complete!
The final paper is something you should also start thinking about as it could help guide how you approach your research or data collection. Read through these Final Report Guidelines to get an idea of what we are looking for in your paper. The Final Paper is due January 15.
MONDAY, 11/9/09
This coming Friday, you have two assignments due that are outlined below. To finish the ISEF Paperwork assignment, you will need to fill out all forms as hard copies to give to your teacher by Friday. You are also going to need to fill out a few things online with the username and password you got when you turned in Form 1 to your teacher last week.
Go to http://affiliatedfairs.org/fair_apps/login/project_login_form.php to log into the fair registration page. When you are there you have two things to do:
First, you need to add any group members that are not already on the page.
Second, fill out Form 1A online. The abstract will be done later in the process.
The various CV permission forms you will need are provided below:
MONDAY, 11/2/09
The next set of assignments really starts you down the road toward your actual experimentation. There are three parts to the assignment that is due on 11/12-13.
First, you will need to do forms. You will need to look at ISEF Paperwork Checklist #1. Note that there is one part of this assignment that is due this coming Friday. You will not be able to complete the rest of the paperwork assignment until this first part is completed.
The second part is to complete ALL forms that are required for your project. Use the Forms Wizard link above to help you determine which forms are needed. If you need help with this come in EARLY!
Third, you will need to put together your Proposal Outline. This is a sizeable assignment and should not be something that is put off until the last minute. Make sure to include all sections that are asked for in the guidelines because we assign points to each part.
There is an opportunity to receive a few credits from PSU for competing in ISEF. It involves just a few additional steps, that really are a good idea anyway, beyond the things that we are asking you to do already. Information for the credits is available in this informational letter the university sent to us. Look over the letter with your folks and if it is something you are interested in, come talk to Mr. Kanter by 11/6/09. Note that the credits are not free either financially or free from a little extra work! You will need to fill out the pre-registration by 11/9/09. I emailed PSU and verified that this is only available for juniors and seniors who are working on these projects.
TUESDAY, 10/13/09
You should turn in your background research assignment when you first come to class this week. Our late policies extend to honors assignments too so make sure you are getting assignments in by their due dates.
The next assignment is the Final Topic Assignment and it is due on 10/28 which is the Wednesday before parent-teacher conferences.
MONDAY, 10/5/09
Just a friendly reminder: Mr. Kanter and Mr. Kirsch will be at the Valley Library on Friday 10/9/09 at 9:30am to walk you through the research options available at the library. You are not required to come but you are required to go to the Valley Library to complete the Background Research Assignment that is due Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. More info is available in the entry below for 9/23/09.
FRIDAY, 9/25/09
When you are starting to think about your topics for research, it may help you to get going by looking through the different categories that make up the science fair. http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/students/research_categories.asp has a short description of each of the different categories that you will have to choose from when we sign you up for the fair.
WEDNESDAY, 9/23/09
Prior to open house there will be an informational meeting regarding requirements for earning honors credit in physics, chemistry, and marine science. The meeting will begin at 5:30 PM in room F-21 and will last as long as there are questions. The overall goal of this meeting is to provide students and parents with the information they need in deciding whether or not to pursue the honors option in these classes. This meeting precedes the fall open house, the idea being to consolidate the number of times students have to come to CV in the evening.
All students are to complete this Background Research Assignment on an individual basis. The primary source articles students select MUST be obtained from OSU's Valley Library in person. Students must obtain unique articles from one another. In other words, two students working in the same group can not review the same article. To assist students with their research at the Valley Library, students are invited to an informational session that will be held at the Valley Library on Friday, 10/9/08 in the Autzen Room at 9:30 AM. This is a perfect time to collect all the articles you will need for the assignment with assistance from your instructors. This assignment is due on either Tuesday 10/13 (for Even classes) or Wednesday10/14 (for Odd classes).
