Prior to open house there will be an informational meeting regarding requirements for earning honors credit in physics, chemistry, and marine science. The meeting will begin at 5:30 PM in room F-21 and will last as long as there are questions. The overall goal of this meeting is to provide students and parents with the information they need in deciding whether or not to pursue the honors option in these classes. This meeting precedes the fall open house, the idea being to consolidate the number of times students have to come to CV in the evening.

Project Timeline , Milestones, and Due Dates. This timeline was last updated on 1/15/09.
All students are to complete this Literature Review Assignment on an individual basis. The primary source articles students select MUST be obtained from OSU's Valley Library. Students must obtain unique articles from one another. In other words, two students working in the same group can not review the same article. To assist students with their research at the Valley Library, students are invited to an informational session that will be held at the Valley Library on Friday, 10/10/08 (see below). This assignment is due on either Monday 10/13 (for Odd classes) or Tuesday 10/14 (for Even classes).
FRIDAY, 10/3/08
All student groups need to submit their group topic and an initial question TODAY.
FRIDAY, 10/10/08
All students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting regarding the use of OSU's Valley Library. The meeting is scheduled to take place from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM in the Autzen room of the Valley Library. The Valley Library is located in the center of OSU's campus and can be located on this Interactive OSU campus map. At this meeting, students will be shown how to complete data base searches of scientific journals, find a journal in print, and physically locate the article. A good portion of the meeting is intended to allow students to collect articles and other resources for their projects. BRING CHANGE AND/OR MONEY SO THAT YOU CAN PHOTOCOPY YOUR ARTICLES!!

Your teachers have decided to add another assignment that we wish to have turned in on Wednesday, October 29th. We are assigning this not to siimply add to the shear amount of things you have to do. Rather, we realize how critical this initial phase is for a successful project and how helpful it will be for you to, once you have refined your initial topic and question, take the time to perform some additional research. This always helps researchers to quickly and efficiently develop a viable and legitimate investigation. So, we are asking each group to complete this Final Topic Assignment. Again, this is a GROUP assignment -- only a single copy for the group needs to be turned in. Please stop in and clarify any questions you have with your instructor prior to this due date.
WEDNESDAY, 10/29/08
The timeline was revised today to give students another week with which to prepare their initial project outlines. Use this Proposal Outline Guidelines to complete your proposal. Proposal grades will be based on adherence to these guidelines. DO NOT MINIMIZE THE PROCEDURE SECTION -- IT SHOULD BE COMPLETE, REFLECT EXTENSIVE THOUGHT ON YOUR PART, AND IT SHOULD ALLOW THE READER TO COMPLETE YOUR PROJECT IN ITS ENTIRETY WITHOUT REQUIRING THE READER TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS OF YOU.
THURSDAY, 11/6/08
There will be an informational meeting at lunch in F-21 to discuss the paperwork required for ISEF. AT LEAST ONE PERSON FROM EACH GROUP SHOULD ATTEND THIS MEETING! Feel free to bring food for lunch. The ISEF webpage will be demonstrated. Students are responsible for going to the NWSE Web Page and learning what paperwork is required for their projects. Paperwork must be submitted and signed before students can begin work on their projects.
Initial Paperwork Checklist. This lists what should be turned in by Wednesday 11/12 and Thursday 11/13. Some of the ISEF forms (such as the abstract form) can't be completed yet. But many of the forms can and should be completed by this date. Students -- in order to complete the online version of these forms YOU HAVE TO GO TO YOUR TEACHER, PRESENT FORM 1 TO HIM, AND HE MUST ENTER YOU AS A GROUP. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN COMPLETE YOUR FORMS. YOUR TEACHER WILL GIVE YOU AN EXHIBIT NUMBER AS WELL AS A PASSWORD. And the only way you can get Form 1 completed is to know exactly what you will be doing for your project.
Group Evaluation Form (to be completed when requested by your teacher).
Parent Permission Form. This must be signed by the parent and returned to school before students may participate in school-sponsored field trips. Fill in all blanks. Your teacher is the school representative. Mark the date of activity as "various throughout the year" -- so that this single permission slip will be good all semester. Students wishing to go off-site at any time (not just during class time) to pursue their research projects MUST complete this form and list on this form all locations you will be traveling to and the approximate times and dates. Again, indicating "Willamette River, Various times from November - April" is okay and can cover multiple trips with one form. You should also place CWOSE and NWSE on the form for location. Mark the appropriate means of transportation as well.
Student Driver / Rider Permission Form. This form must be signed by the parent before a student may drive themselves or others, or ride with other students to or from a school-sponsored activity (which is any step of your project, even on weekends, as well as to and from CWOSE). Parents only need to fill out the portion of this form that they wish to permit their students to do. Mark the date of activity as above so that this single permission slip will be good all semester.
Use of Private Vehicle Waiver Form. This form must be signed by ANYONE USING THEIR OWN VEHICLE (student or parent) during a school sponsored activity. In most cases, the student -- the driver -- will be completing this form.
WEDNESDAY, 11/19/08
The following are the guidelines you are to use when writing your final paper: Final Research Paper Guidelines. You will also use some of the guidelines listed here for portions of your Formal Proposal.
Statistical considerations for your investigation. All studies are to utilize regressions and/or t-tests to help support the conclusions you draw from the data you collect in your investigation. This Sample Spreadsheet illustrates the use of both of these tools using Microsoft Excel. Certainly there are other statistical tools that might be used when analyzing your data, however these are the only two required. If you feel that your investigation will not lend itself very well to the use of either of these tools, consult your teacher ASAP.
TUESDAY, 1/13/09
All student groups are to submit a Group Evaluation Form to your teacher on FRIDAY, 1/16. Students working as individuals do not need to submit a group evaluation.
While the final - final version of your poster is due on Friday, 2/13, all students are required to do the following:
Sign-up for a time slot to meet with Ms. Ranelletti (an OSU graduate student). This meeting must take place prior to Wednesday, Feb. 11th. YOU MUST MEET AS AN ENTIRE GROUP AT ONCE. There will be some lunch time slots to meet the needs of groups comprised of students from more than one class.
The sign-up sheet for interview times will be posted on the bulletin board between Mr. Kanter's and Mr. Kirsch's room within the hall. This sign-up sheet will be placed on the board on the board on the morning of 1/20. First come, first serve.
At least TWO SCHOOL DAYS prior to this meeting, you will provide Ms. Ranelletti with an electronic copy of your final poster (note the word FINAL -- don't submit something you think that you will want to change later).
The purpose of this meeting is to allow Ms. Ranelletti (who has experience with science competitions similar to the one you will partake in at the end of February) to give you constructive feedback on your poster.
The final-final version of your poster, submitted to your teacher on Feb. 13th, is to address all of the items discussed with Ms. Ranelletti at your meeting.
WEDNESDAY, 1/21/09
There will be a non-mandatory lunch meeting in F-21. At this meeting, guidelines for your group posters will be presented. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON FROM EACH GROUP ATTEND THIS MEETING.
FRIDAY, 1/23/09
There will be a MANDATORY lunch meeting in F-21. At this meeting, students will be given back their paperwork to check. Each form will be discussed at this time. ALL PAPERWORK MUST BE SUBMITTED BY FEB. 2nd. Students are responsible for making sure all of their forms are completed correctly and are in on time. The school will submit your completed packed as a school. Use this Final PaperWork Checklist to make sure you have all of your forms in.
WEDNESDAY, 2/18/09
There will be a meeting next Thursday 2/26 during lunch in F-21 to go over last minute details and answer questions. Attendance is mandatory for everyone attending the fair on Saturday, 2/28 (so this means everyone!!!!).
Online information for the fair, including a detailed schedule, can be located at this website: CWOSE Home Page.
Students -- by now you have been informed if your paperwork is incomplete. If it is incomplete at this point, your project is still not approved by ISEF. It is your responsibility to insure your group gets approved. Your teacher has given you email and fax numbers to send corrected forms. If you fail to complete your paperwork and you get disqualified, you will not be able to earn honors credit for your class. No one (including your teacher) is correcting your paperwork for you. That said, your teacher will answer whatever questions you may have -- please ask.
If you are riding the bus, please be here by 6:15 AM. Set-up for posters and check-in occurs from 7:00 - 8:30 AM. Registration, particularly if you have paperwork problems, can take longer than you might expect.
If you are handling your own transportation, please be on site at the fair by no later than 7:15 AM.
Dress should be business casual.
Students -- plan to spend the entire day at the fair including the awards ceremony at the end.
DO NOT DAMAGE YOUR POSTERS AFTER THE FAIR!! We want to bring all of the posters back to CV so that they can be mounted and displayed throughout the building. Please keep this in mind when you mount them to your board.
Students are asked to correct their final papers and bring a clean copy with them to the fair.
Students will be given their original paperwork the morning of the fair. In the past you have needed these.
TUESDAY, 2/24/09
Here is some information we received from the folks running CWOSE this year:
THURSDAY, 2/26/09
Mandatory meeting during lunch in F-21 -- everyone must attend.
Scheduled times for judging individual projects: CWOSE Judging schedule. Look for your exhibit number. Where there is an XX, a judge is scheduled to meet with you. BE SURE TO BE AT YOUR POSTER AT TH IS TIME. Each column represents 15 minutes with the first column starting at 9:30 AM. Should things start late, all times will slide.
WEDNESDAY, 3/18/09
All students planning on attending NWSE in Portland on Friday 4/3/09 must do the following:
Complete a new Parent Permission Form for this specific fair -- we want to make sure parents are aware of this trip to Portland on Friday 4/3/09.
Complete the rider/driver permission forms above if you plan on driving yourself, other students, or riding with other students to Portland. (See forms listed above). Again, because this is in Portland, we ask that you complete new permission slips -- a trip to Portland is substantially different than one to Albany and we need to make sure parents are fully aware of this difference.
Mr. Kirsch must have a revised poster by Monday, 3/30 if you wish to have CV print a new one for you to take to Portland. Monday is the absolute latest for this. Period.
At present, based upon the # of students going, Mr. Kanter is planning on driving the school van to Portland. Please return to this webpage to learn exact departure / return details.
THURSDAY, 3/19/09
The following is from an email from Stephanie Jones, fair director for NWSE:
The last day to turn in paperwork corrections is Wednesday March 25th.
Set-up: review the display regulations at http://www.nwse.org/display
Set-up is from 7:00 - 8:40am on Friday April 3rd: High School students check in at registration table on 3rd floor of Smith Center near room 333. Each student will receive a name tag and map. Exhibit setup and Safety Check take place in Smith Center rooms 333 and 355. Students set up their displays and must remain there until passed by the safety check team in yellow construction hats. The ISEF forms are required to be at the exhibit. Students with APPROVED paperwork will receive a sticker showing they have passed safety check. If paperwork is not APPROVED, the student has to provide corrected copies of forms for the SRC table to get a sticker. Students leave the exhibit area when they have completed the Safety Check. High School students, not adults, are required to be present for Safety Check. Be aware that Smith does not unlock its doors until 7am, so arriving early is not a benefit. Also please be aware that judges are arriving at the same time, so keep the hallways clear.
TUESDAY, 3/31/09
STUDENTS GOING TO PORTLAND WITH MR. KANTER ON FRIDAY: be at CV at 5:30 AM. Expect to return to CV between 10:00 and 10:30 PM. Also, remember to turn in all of your permission slips to Donna Granados ASAP!!
