New Boundaries Assigned to Schools – Effective September 2008

Updated 11-7-07

The Corvallis School Board decided on new attendance area boundaries that take effect September 2008.  These boundary changes impact Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln, Mountain View and Wilson elementary school attendance areas and a minor change for middle schools and high schools.  In making these changes, the board endorsed the Superintendent’s recommendation for a gentle transition for current students.  Future students will be expected to attend the newly assigned schools.

Why did the district change boundaries?

The district has been planning to review boundaries for the past few years.  School closures and shifting student populations over time have created crowded conditions at Adams, Lincoln, and Mt. View elementary schools.  While the current boundaries balance the population between our middle and high schools, parents in the Hillcrest neighborhood tell us that the current boundary, which zigzags up and down streets and was created prior to the extension of Circle Boulevard, no longer makes sense.  Additionally, Jefferson elementary students have been split between the two high schools and middle schools and the board decided that they should have the option of choosing which secondary school to attend.

How are students living in reassigned boundary areas affected?

If the neighborhood that you live in has been reassigned to a different school, your student may continue at the old school through completion of the highest grade.  Elementary students living farther than one mile from the old elementary school, will continue to receive transportation for the next two years.  Any siblings entering school in the 2008-09 or 2009-10 school years will be allowed to attend the old elementary school if their attendance will overlap with your currently enrolled student.

If your child lives in a reassigned boundary area and you would like him/her to stay at the current school, you must indicate that choice in writing no later than January 3, 2008.  The district will send you a letter outlining your options and your written response will tell us where to plan for your student in the 2008-09 school year.

My student is not currently attending a Corvallis School, how will she be affected?

Students not currently enrolled in a Corvallis public school would be expected to attend the newly assigned neighborhood school, unless they are offered a seat at a requested school through the district’s centralized transfer process.  Transportation to the newly assigned neighborhood school will be available to elementary students who live more than one mile from their neighborhood school.

What is the Jefferson Choice option?

The Jefferson Elementary School boundary is the only Corvallis elementary that splits between two middle and high school attendance areas.  The board decided that students living in the Jefferson Elementary School boundary north of Circle Blvd. and who attend Jefferson through  completion of 5th grade may choose which middle and high school to attend.  This is a one-time option and written notice must be given to the district no later than the first Thursday in January of the 5th grade year.  After that point, students would be welcome at their assigned boundary school or eligible to request transfers on the same basis as other Corvallis students.

How do I submit a transfer request?

The Corvallis School District operates a centralized transfer process.  The application process for Requests for Ttransfer of students entering grades 1-12 is open from November 7, 2007 through January 18, 2008.  For more information about transfers: Click Here
