  Dawley School Expectations Re-Taught Twelve 5th grade students, mentors, traveled around to classrooms teaching school-wide expectations. Mentors met during 3 of their recess times to go over expectations and work on presentations. This was a great service for classroom teachers, as they felt their students would learn from peers better this information had already been taught by them one.      
  Dawley Students Assisting with School Book Fair 5th grade student mentors assisted the parent teacher organization (APT) in running the spring Book Fair. The students were given the opportunity to cashier, assist in ordering books, provided store security and help customers find books they were looking for.   Libby Stoops, APT (541) 758-4335  
  Wray Musical Performance Students in Mrs. Wray and Rodriguez's classes rehearsed and performed a concert for the residents of the Regent.     $25.00 for printing, songs and bus
  Thomson Fundraiser for Heartland Humane Society All 5th graders were given the opportunity to voluntarily donate money t help out Heartland Humane Society. The students raised over $500. The money was presented to Heartland during a presentation by Heartland showing the students where the money will be spent.   Heartland Humane Society (541) 757-9000  
  Raleigh Play Performance Students have been studying about farms and animals on farms. The students performed what they have learned for the school and parents in a play format.     $72.00
  Thomson School Post Office Fifth graders provided a post office for the school. Students and parents could buy stamps from student workers in the mornings. Stamped letters were put in a mailbox and 5th graders delivered the notes and letters to students for a 9 day period. Students visited classrooms explaining the project and what the money went for, 5th grade overnight outdoor camp. Students created the stamps and cut them out, made change, and delivered the mail.     $5.60 for copies
  Thomson Adams Safety Patrol 5th grade students volunteer to be school crossing guards at the crossing on 35th street and the crosswalk in front of the school. Students took on roles as Captain and they made sure that all slots were filled. Students were trained how to safely cross students. A parent volunteer organized the schedule and made phone calls to make sure students knew their schedule. They provide a valuable service to the school making it safer for students to walk or bike to school.      
  Thomson Science Night Fifth grade students were assigned a science project where they had to perform and experiment. They had to provide a question, hypothesis and results. Each student presented their experiments to the classes throughout the school and then they were on display for the community to view. Students learned from their own project as well as other students.      
  Libby Stoops, APT Penny Drive for Cricket Students voluntarily participated in a penny drive to help out with Cricket Beebe's medical expense, a Corvallis student stricken with a brain tumor. Students raised $2,466.81. Students assisted with taking the money in to be counted and delivering the money to Cricket's accout.      
  Dawley Corvallis 509j Retirement Banquet Nine 5th grade students helped clear dishes, serve drinks, and offered refills to those attending the annual school district retirement banquet on May 13th. With the 5th graders assistance those who planned the event didn't have to spend much time cleaning up.   Pearson & Dawley Canned Food & Personal Hygiene Drive Students throughout the school collected canned foods, non-perishable items and personal hygiene products for those that are less fortunate and/or homeless. School wide students collected 1190 lbs. (1600 items) compared to 1037 the previous year. 12 5th grade students assisted in planning, colelcting items and presenting items to Linn Benton Food Share and Corvallis Homeless Education Advocate.   Linn Benton Food Share, Ryan McCambridge, 752-1010

  Dawley Problem Solving Wheel Twelve 5th graders, Mentors, paired up and presented the Problem Solving Wheel to 7 of our classes. Mentors met 3 times during their recess time to go over presentations and possible questions from students. Students in the classes were shown the problem solving wheel and told they could take some of their problems there to work our. Each class was given a copy of the wheel and it is also painted on each playground.      
  Jepsen-Minyard Art @ Adams Show and Benefit Students throughout the school prepared art work, in art class, lead by Mrs. Jepsen-Minyard. Projects completed during the year were kept at school and then put on display for parents and the community to view. Students had the opportunity to have at least one of their pieces of art work chosen for the show. This was also an opportunity for people to see the variety of art styles and media used during art instruction. Donations were accepted to help support Art @ Adams in the future.      
  Wray, Hausen, Mills School Wide Recycling Mrs. Wray's 2nd grade class picks up the primary recycling bins and takes them out once a week to the big recycle dumpster. All Intermediate classrooms take their own recycle bins out. All students are encourage to recycle in each classroom. In the Cafeteria Mrs. Hausen and Mrs. Mills set up an are and system for recycling milk cartons. Both Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Hausen encourage students to only take the food they will eat sending less food waste to the landfill.   Allied Waste, (541) 754-0444  
  All Teachers School Buddy Classes All classes paired up with another classroom as a buddy class. Upper grade classes adopted a younger grade class and spent time, at least once a month, working on a project together or working on reading. Some buddy classes went on field trips together. This opportunity gave older students a chance to teach younger students what they have learned and gave younger students a chance to learn from older students.      
  Thomson Play Performance Students in Mrs. Thomson's class learned about fairy tales. All students took part in performing the fairy tales in play form for parents of the class. Students helped make the scenery, made costumes, and chose parts they wanted to play.     $4.80 for copies of the script
  Ash Adams Garden Club Intermediate students formed a garden club. They met once per week to plan what items they would grow in the garden and learned how to maintain the garden. Students learned how to prepare the soil, start seeds, and harvest. They are able to share all they have learned by inviting all the 4th and 5th grade classes to the garden for demonstrations and instructions.   Benton County Soil & Water Conservation District donated $250 in grant money and APT donated $80 $350 for compost, soil, and seeds

  Val Boggs Welcome to School! In order to help our incoming Kindergartners next year, K-1-2 ESL/ELD students are creating a "Welcom to School" ABC Book. The book will be published and bound. Then, next Fall, the students will visit the "new " kinders in their classroom and read the book!   Val Boggs "Who Are You?" The 4th, 5th, 6th grade ELD class helped to open up lines of communication within our school community. They wanted staff and students to get to know each other better. We worked to create an interactive station in our hallway and recruited folks to join the fun! Val Boggs Smoking! It's a KILLER! The students learned all about the technical harmful effects of smoking. Videos, guest speakers, books, and websites provide the information. Then, working in small groups, using a cartoon format, they wrote skits about the topic. They then performed these skits for our 4th graders at Franklin.   Claudia Argo, Laurel Ritter & Chris Boatwright Art With Heart The third graders at Garfield Elementary held their annual art gallery. This year the students decided to sell their art in order to raise funds for their fellow classmate, Cricket Beebe. Cricket is a third grader who is undergoing treatment for brain cancer. The students priced their art, and donations were accepted. All proceeds went to the Cricket Beebe fund.   Sparrow Club Sparrow Club - for each hour of Service-Learning that students do, the club donates $10.00 to the identified cause, in this case, the Cricket Beebe Fund.

  Dave Gable Bullying and Harassment presentations We examined the steps to respect bullying and harassment lesson. 6th grade students then picked the most important concepts from the lessons to develop some type of information packet that they would share with one 8th grade and one 7th grade student from another P.E.   Stefni Stephens, Janai Redpatl, Sandy Bell Incas, Aztecs, Mayas Students in each class learned about one of the cultures. They prepared speeches and PowerPoint presentations. Then students presented about heir culture to other classes in one of the 6th grade classrooms and listened to presentations on the other two cultures.      
  Tamara Bennings, Melissa Cadotte, Don Tucker Book Buddies Middle school students completed a unit on children's literature. Students were matched up with an elementary buddy. On the first visit they engaged the elementary buddies in games, activities and stories to get to know their interests and personalities. Back in the classroom, students wrote and illustrated a book especially for their buddy. The covers of the books were laminated and the book bound. On the second visit, middle school students read and gave the elementary buddy their books.

  Susan Klinkhammer Bulletin Boards Teams of students have been responsible for putting up bulletin boards all year. They meet with teachers to see if work is available to be displayed. If not, they create their own special seasonal display. There are six bulletin boards they've kept up and beautiful.   Susan Klinkhammer Student Store The student store has been run all year by a team of 6th grade students. They determine pricing, keep an inventory, open the store for sales daily, work with the office staff to make weekly deposits of money, and keep it clean and orderly. Occasionally they have announcements in the morning to promote a special "deal" they have created.   Joel Weinstein Birds in Flight Working under the direction of our art teacher, Joel Weinstein, all of our 6th grade students created paper mache birds. They watched Winged Migration for inspiration and studied birds and their motion and shape in flight. Working in pairs they created 120 birds that are now hanging as mobiles ("in flight") as permanent art displays at LPMS.   Susan Klinkhammer Track Buttons Group of students set out to raise money for the LPMS track program. They went to track practice and photographed the athletes. They then printed their pictures and made them into buttons. These buttons are sold for $2.00 at the students store. Although not much revenue was gained, they were able to cover their costs.     $55.00 cost of buttons

  Rose/ Toro/Tingey Native Plant Garden Enhancement Our native plant are lacked clear boundaries, resulting in damage to plants by students at lunch and under utilization by science classes. Our students tore out landscaping cloth and borders, creating clear outdoor eating areas and an expanded prairie plant portion f the native plant area. They then added 4 cubic yards of gravel and 6 cubic yards of wood mulch. The next step is more planting in the fall, signs, and temporary fencing.      
  Nepute Ocean Service Learning Students were in groups and picked out a project from the book, 50 Ways to Save the Ocean. They then researched and organized how they were going to implement and follow through with it. They also had to share what they were doing with some other audiences. All students traveled to Agate Beach and helped clean the beach for 45 minutes.   SOLV $50.00 in materials
  Newton Stress Relievers The students learned about stress and healthy ways to relive negative and positive stress. The students then made posters that were put all together in a "quilt" type banner to display in the school and to teach others.      
  Newton Drug Awareness We discussed the varies drugs and how they effect people in all areas of their lives - mental, emotion, physical, social. The students then made poster to inform their peers and those visiting our school on the effects of drugs with positive alternatives. We gathered data on Wight collected and used data in problem solving.   Carol Sumner Family Night Math/Art/Recycling Various math classes at LPMS worked on projects to have presentations at our 4th annual Family, Math, Art, and Recycling Night. Projects varied from figuring out recipes to making refreshments, completing displays about recycling information, using geometry to create tissellations, etc. In February, 2008, at LPMS, form 7-8 over 300 students and parents joined in to take part in the activities.   Sally Boyer (AmeriCorps) CHS PeaceJam Club CHS PeaceJam club students met weekly, attended trainings to learn about non-violence and the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, and chose a service project. They decided to fundraise for PlayPumps International, a non-profit that improves access to potable water in sub-Sahara Africa, by holding a "Walk For Water" walk-a-thon at the CHS track and by hosting an information booth at the Indoor Farmers' Market for the United Nations' "World Water Day". Students worked on publicity, attended the event and then presented their project to the Laureate at PeaceJam NW 2008 at Oregon State University. Rich Larrowe Honors Global Studies Service-Learning Projects

Groups of 2-5 students organized the following projects:

1.       Raising Skin Cancer Awareness by talking to students at LPMS

2.       Raising money with a bake sale and information booths for the “Africa Well Fund”

3.       Raised $103 to help stop deforestation with a raffle. Raised awareness about deforestation by giving presentations in classes, and fundraising around town with donation boxes at local businesses

4.       Advocating for local products at Farmer’s Market. Attempting to convince the school district to purchase food locally

5.       Raising awareness about homelessness by organizing a donation class-competition for food and clothes. Raised 400 lbs. of resources, which were sent to Jackson Street Youth Shelter.

6.       Sold foods and placed donation boxes at local businesses to raise money for AIDS prevention in Lesotho.

7.       Working with Solar Creek to find a business to partner with the school to purchase solar panels. Sending letters to wealthy and influential alumni of CHS to help with the purchase. The group hopes to have the panels at CHS by Spring 2009.

8.       Talked to 6th graders at LPMS about the causes, effects and solutions related to deforestation. Raised money through Rotary Club to plant trees.

9.       Raise money for building wells in Ethiopia with two music concerts. Also went ot Franklin to talk with students about water-related issues. Held a benefit night at Papa’s Pizza. Presented at PeaceJam. Made video and sent it to Oprah. Applied to a grant. Raised $3,300.

10.   Talked to 60-70 4th graders about deforestation.

11.   Raised $1,150 to build wells in Uganda with the sale of t-shirts and donations from local businesses.

12.   Raised $700 with a  Fun-Run at Bald Hill for World Hunger. They will purchase live animals with the money.

13.   Raised $140 with bake sales to send to Columbia, a nation plagued by drug problems and displacement.

14.   Raised awareness about air pollution by talking with students at Garfield Elementary.

15.   Raised money with a guitar hero tournament for PlayPumps International.

16.   Raised money from donations made to see the play, “The Good Body,” that students produced. Donated funds to Heifer International.

17.   Raised money for rural education programs in Ecuador with a benefit concert.

18.   Hosted a raffle to benefit Iraqi refugees. Raised $1,200 for MerciCorps.

  Brenda Cochran Crescent Valley Preschool A preschool with 24 three to five year olds in integrated into the Child Development program at CVHS. Three days a week the children come to CV where the high school students are the teachers of the preschool. High school students are required to plan and execute developmentally appropriate activities for the preschoolers, as well as interact with and guide them in a positive way.   K. Moses Cadet Art Teacher (Spring) CVHS students traveled to two local grade schools to provide K-5 art instruction.   K. Moses Fall Empty Bowls CVHS and the Willamette Valley Ceramic Guild teamed up to throw, trim, and glaze approximately 200 bowls for the "Empty Bowls" hunger relief project. 20 guild memebers and 15 students threw bowls for the on-going event at Sunnyside Up Cafe. John at Sunnyside donates a bowl of soup for the $10-purchase of a bowl.
