Service-Learning Project Descriptions 2009-10
| School | Teacher | Project | Description | CRLS | Essential Skills | Community Partners | Community Resources |
| Adams Elementary | Mrs. Thomson | Lets Make A Difference Day | Students did jobs at home to earn money for the American Red Cross. This was done in response to the 9/11 event where people helped others in a time of need. Students voted for the Red Cross because they help others. | American Red Cross: 753-6628 | |||
| Mrs. Dawley | Adams Caring and Sharing Food Drive | We held a school-wide assembly to kick off our annual canned food drive for the Linn Benton Food Share. Students were asked to donate canned, packaged or dried foods for families in need of additional food. Fifth grade students paired up with their buddy class and collected the food out of the hall that students throughout the school had brought. Students collected 851 items in 7days. | Linn Benton Food Share: 752-1010 | ||||
| Mrs. Ash | Adams Garden/Garden Club | We use a variety of volunteers to maintain our school garden-parents and other community members. Teachers sign up to use garden beds to grow flowers/vegetables with their classrooms. I run a "garden club" during school hours for those students interested in participating a little more. |

| All Teachers | School Buddy Classes | All classes paired up with another classroom as a buddy class. Upper grade classes adopted a younger grade class and spent time, at least once a month, working on a project together or working on reading. Some buddy classes went on field trips together. This opportunity gave older students a chance to teach younger students what they have learned and gave younger students a chance to learn from older students. | |||||
| Mr. Behrens and Mrs. Cooper-Rovnan | Stonybrook Valentine performance | The second graders (Mr. Behrens_ and fifth graders (Mrs. Cooper-Rovnan) teamed up to provide Valentine's Day entertainment to the residents at Stonybrook Assisted living. We performed 3 short plays, sang 3 songs, and interviewed the residents about their advice and memories. | Stonybrook Assisted Living (758-2026) | ||||
| Mrs. Laukkanen and Mrs. Raleigh | Poetry Unit and Open House | Mrs. Laukkanen, student teacher, taught a poetry unit incorporating visual arts. Students wrote poetry using rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, descriptive words and shape. We combined two poems from each child into a poetry anthology that was published. Parents came to an open house where children shared their poems. | |||||
| Mrs. Thomson | Adams School Post Office | 5th grade students designed and sold stamps to be used for inter-school mail. Students, teachers, staff and parents used the stamps on letters to be mailed to others in the school. 5th graders collected, sorted and delivered mail to classrooms each day. | |||||
| Mrs. DeLaMater | School wide Recycling |
Mrs. DeLaMater's 3rd grade class picks up the primary recycle bins and
takes them out once a week to the big recycle dumpster. All
Intermediate classrooms take their own recycle bins out. All
students are encouraged to recycle in each classroom. In the Cafeteria Mrs. Hausen and Mrs. Mills set up an area and system for recycling milk cartons. Both Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Hausen encourage students to only take the food they will eat sending less food waste to the landfill. |
Allied Waste (754-0444)
| Mrs. Behrens/Kiekel | Autumn Amble | Parents volunteers and I organized a 2008 meter course for the entire school (442 students) to participate in an organized run/walk. CHS Leadership class students monitored the course, parents gave out ribbons and a snack to all finishers. The event was a celebration of over 2 months of Adams in Motion (AIM), a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday running/walking program offered during morning recess. Parents and family member were invited to share in this healthy activity to help get students on the path of healthy living. | Materials donated: ribbons, snacks, bib numbers, and course markings. Donors included Five Star Sports, Adams APT, and anonymous donors. | ||||
| Mrs. Braibish | Theatre Production: The Wiz | Students from Adams, Franklin, Garfield, Jefferson, Lincoln, Linus Pauling, Montessori, Corvallis High School, and Crescent Valley took part. Students ran a behind the scenes look at the production of The Wiz. They discussed all aspects to the audience of students and teachers of how The Wiz was put on. We provided buses to and from other schools to view the behind the scenes production. The whole production culminated with a fee showing to all faculty and staff. Heartland Humane Society allowed the use of one of the dogs to play the role of Toto in hopes that the dog would be adopted. |

| Mrs. Behrens | Earth Day Posters | With our 5th Grade "buddy class" we created almost 20 feet of a mural with the Earth Day tag line: Use hands, hearts and heads to care for the Earth. We displayed it in the window of Studio 355 in downtown Corvallis so it would be part of the Procession of the Species on 4/18 and Earth Day 4/22 |

The students assisted the caterers with serving punch and clearing dishes, once guests had finished their food. This helped the district save money by not having to pay the caterers to clear the dishes and gave the staff members, who had planned and prepared for the dinner, the opportunity to enjoy the evening and listen to all the presentations.

After devising this idea the group of students then are in charge of the necessary planning and organizing; this can involve anything from contacting administration to get approval, creating a marketing idea to spread the information, to basic problem solving skills when confronted with an issue. While going through this process students do reflections within their groups over what they have accomplished thus far in the project. Students are provided with help from the teacher, but these projects are based on the idea of students motivation and support. They are the individuals that conduct and see their projects through. | NA | NA

Corvallis Outdoor School | The high school
counselor challenge for 2008 OS was to create and become "citizen
scientists" or informed individuals who can assess current conditions
and impacts at the Camp Tadmor site. Our curriculum focus included
the 150th anniversary of Oregon becoming a state, and looking ahead to
the next 50 years, as 6th grade, high school students and middle school
teachers were immersed in a watershed curriculum that was taught
utilizing the Camp Tadmor site. Immersion in the Corvallis Outdoor
School includes the use of current scientific practices and an
historical perspective on the environment, and how it has changed over
time. Participants applied data collection techniques to pre-assigned survey plots located throughout the 200 acre Camp Tadmor site to obtain a baseline survey of water quality, forest types, plant diversity, soil composition and evidence of wildlife. High school students were responsible for guiding 6th grade students through all of the steps in collecting data, turning in student handbooks on the last day. The results of these studies will be posted on our Oregon Trout website for comparison as other groups utilize the Camp Tadmor site. |
