What is SEAC?
Established in 1979, SEAC is the Corvallis School District's Special Education Advisory Committee.
Parents and community members serve on the committee. The Corvallis School District Student Services Director and Special Education Coordinator serve as SEAC advisors.
The purpose of the Committee, as set forth in the by-laws, is
- To act as a resource group to the Corvallis School District, providing suggestions for improvements in special education services,
- To serve in a consultative capacity to aid in the development of programs that will enhance the education of all students, and
- To enhance communication regarding special education issues among parents, site councils, school district administrators, directors, and staff and the community of Corvallis.
Among many other activities, SEAC provides parent training through workshops, newsletter articles, and meetings throughout the year.
At the end of each school year, SEAC submits a report to the Superintendent and Board of Directors. The report
- Summarizes SEAC activities during the year
- Commends individuals and groups in the school district for actions that serve to support students with disabilities in an exemplary manner
- Specifies SEAC goals for the next school year
- Makes recommendations to the school district regarding special education issues and services
SEAC meetings are usually held on the second Monday of each month August through June from 12:00 to 1:30 PM at the Corvallis School District's Harding Center, 510 NW 31st Street, Corvallis, OR.
Meetings often include presentations by district administrators and teachers on topics of importance to parents of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Topics include changes in special education law, transportation issues, positive behavior support, inclusion, and the impact of state learning standards on students with disabilities.
SEAC meetings are open public meetings. Anyone interested in special education issues is welcome to attend.
SEAC also welcomes new members who are interested in improving learning for all students. For information about membership or about SEAC, contact Kathy Eckhart-Mason at 738-2955 or Denise Cardinali at 929-2645.
