Corvallis School District

Procedures/ Guidelines Regarding Emergency Weather Plans

2007-08

==================================================================

Corvallis School District Staff:

As you know, we sometimes have to cancel school, close the district, delay the start of school, or release early because of bad weather.  This communication is the annual reminder of procedures we use when we must cancel school, close the district, or change schedules because of weather.

When the decision has been made to cancel school, close the district, or delay the start, we rely on emergency phone trees, local radio, television stations, and the web Flash Alert for notification to staff and parents.

District closure, school cancellation and/or delayed start information will be broadcast no later than 6:30 a.m.

1)     School is canceled for the day:  Food Service, Educational Assistants, and teachers do not report — Maintenance & school office staff & administrators report as close to their assigned time as they can safely arrive.  District office is open.)  Note: When school is closed for the day, extra curricular activities, including sports events are canceled.

2)     District Closure:  When District is closed for the day, only the emergency crew is to report to work.  Members of the emergency crew (select employees from Auxiliary Services and other District Office departments) will report to work as close to their assigned time as they can safely arrive.

3)     When a delayed start is announced, ALL classified and non-represented staff are requested to report as close to their assigned time as is possible, given road conditions.

4)     When schools and the district are closed, AESOP substitute finder system calls substitutes to notify them that they are not needed.

According to collective bargaining agreement contract language, teachers are not required to be in attendance when student attendance is not required. (Example: When students are on a 2-hour delayed opening schedule, teachers are expected to report no later than 2 hours beyond their usual start time.)

When an emergency early release is announced for weather related conditions, ALL staff are requested to leave their assignment as soon as the students are safely on their way home, and schools have been secured.  Employees designated as emergency crew should check in with their supervisors for direction.
