Glossary of DLI Terms


Dual language immersion (DLI)                                                                                                                                          
A form of bilingual instruction in which students are taught language arts and other academic content such as math, science and social studies in two languages. Each language is used for at least half the instructional day at the elementary level. DLI programs usually start in kindergarten or first grade and extend for at least five years and may continue into middle and high school. There are two types of DLI programs:

Two-way immersion -- In a two-way immersion classroom, the ratio of native English speakers to native Spanish speakers is at least 35:65 in either direction. Two-way immersion is specifically designed to meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELL).

One way immersion -- In a one-way immersion classroom, there is no set requirement for how many students speak each language.
English Language Learner (ELL)      Anyone who is learning English because the language he/she first learned as a child was not English and he/she is not yet fully proficient in English
Native Spanish speaker              
A student whose native language is Spanish because that was the first language he/she was taught as a child; the family typically speaks Spanish at home 
 
Native English speaker    A student whose native language is English because that was the first language he/she was taught as a child; the family typically speaks English at home  
Partner language    The language, other than English, used for instruction in a DLI program. Currently in Corvallis,  the partner language used in DLI programs is Spanish
