Kindergarten Book Buddies

Sixth graders from Linus Pauling Middle School recently visited the children in Elvira Huidor-Dever and Jessica Hall’s kindergarten classes at Garfield Elementary School to share books they had written about the young students much to their delight!

The middler schoolers’ assignment from language arts teachers Suzanne McFarland and Chaundra Smith was to interview a kindergarten student about their favorite animals, what they liked to do and other personal likes and dislikes. They then wrote and illustrated a storybook featuring their new kindergarten buddy as the main character. The final step was to read the story to their young friends before giving the book to them to keep.

All of the books were written in Spanish by both Spanish language learners and native Spanish speakers in the Linus Pauling dual language program. Many of the middle schoolers also were alumni from the dual language immersion program at Garfield.
