SK Math Day

Crescent Valley High School math enthusiasts Ashley Chona, Emilee Tubbs, Jocelyn Brew and JulieAnne Dixon recently rubbed elbows with other math-minded women from across the state during Sonia Kovalevsky Day at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

SK Day is an opportunity for high school girls to visit the WOU campus, participate in various math “games” and meet the faculty and undergrads in the university’s math department. In addition to attending hands-on workshops on topography, game theory and geometry, the CV girls participated in a math competition, with all four winning Burgerville gift cards! CV math teacher Laura Waight also attended the event and participated in a professional development session for teachers.

The goal of SK Day is to encourage young women to continue to study and pursue their interest in math. Sonia Kovalevsky is a famous 19th century Russian mathematician and scientist who had to overcome much bias and discrimination before being recognized as a brilliant mathematician by the academic community of her day.
