What is the first day of school for kindergarteners?
Kindergarten students in Corvallis experience a “gentle start” to their first year in school. During the first week of school (Sept. 5-11), kindergarten teachers will meet one-on-one with students and their parents. This gives teachers an opportunity to get to know the children and complete some quick, informal assessments with each one.

Kindergarten students will attend their first day of class along with just half of their classmates to allow the teacher more time to interact with each child and to teach those key skills necessary for success in kindergarten. After each half of the class goes through this orientation time, the entire class starts school together.

Parents should call their school office to find out what day and time their child is to arrive at school the first time. All kindergarten classes will be session by Sept. 12.

What do I need to know about school lunches?
The price of school lunches in 2012-2013 has increased by $0.10 for secondary schools and $0.25 for elementary schools. Complete information about costs and how food services are offered is available on the Food Services page.

How do I know if I qualify for the Free and Reduced Price Meal program, and where do I sign up?
The guidelines for participating in the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program are available here.

Where can I find my child's bus schedule?
Bus schedules will be posted on the Transportation page of this Web site the week before school begins. Routes also will be posted at each school along with school supply lists.

When do fall sports practices begin at the high schools?
Fall sports teams at both high schools (football, volleyball, cross-country and soccer) offer an optional conditioning week Aug. 13-17. Fall sports practices and tryouts begin on Aug. 20. Student athletes must first be cleared for participation by turning in the necessary paperwork, including an emergency information card and a signed code of conduct form. Each school's forms can be downloaded from the athletics section of the school's Web site -- the links are listed below.

Athletic fees also must be paid. The first and second OSAA sports fees are $150 each; a third sport costs $100.

All freshmen, juniors or new students need a physical exam prior to beginning practice. Sports physicals will be available at Corvallis High School on Aug. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. for a fee of $30; scholarships are available. Crescent Valley High School athletes can get a free physical exam in the training room on Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (any donations will go to the CV football program).

When are school open houses and Back to School Nights?
Most schools will host an open house or "Back to School" night soon after school begins. Parents are invited to come meet their students' teachers and school administrators, tour the school and learn more about their school's curriculum and unique features. These dates will be posted on each school's Web site.

How can I get a Student-Parent Handbook?
Many schools offer their own student-parent handbook which are available in school offices or perhaps, online. The district also has compiled a general student-parent handbook which details the rights and responsibilities of students and the standards for student conduct according to district policies:
