Kindergarten Information

Kindergarten in the Corvallis School District is designed to meet the needs of every child. Our highly qualified teachers nurture our youngest students and engage them in activities especially designed to build their competence and confidence to ensure a successful elementary experience.

Students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enroll in kindergarten.

Parents should register their child for kindergarten at their neighborhood school during the month of March. You will be asked to provide a copy of your child's birth certificate and immunizations records. You also may be asked to show proof of residency (e.g., a driver's license, rental/homeowner agreement, utility bill). If you’re not sure which school boundary area you live in, you may call the district office at 541-757-5811 to find out where to register your child, or go to the School Boundaries page.

                                  MARCH IS KINDERGARTEN MONTH!

Families need to register their child for kindergarten next fall at their neighborhood school, during the month of March. This includes parents seeking transfers.

Parents are invited to attend the open house at their neighborhood school on Thursday, March 14, 2013.  All open houses are set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with one exception. The open house at Franklin K-8 School is 5:30-6:30 p.m.  A classroom visit or school tour may be available (by appointment only) by calling the school office:

Transfer Requests

The district has established specific school boundary areas, but families may request a transfer to a school outside their attendance area. Transfers are granted on a space-available basis via a lottery process. If a transfer is granted, parents are responsible for their child’s transportation and transfers may be rescinded in accordance with district transfer guidelines.

Transfer requests for students entering kindergarten in the fall of 2013 should be made online March 1-31 through the district’s Web site, Transfers page. Parents without Internet access at home are free to use public computers at the district office at 1555 S.W. 35th St., the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, or at their neighborhood school.

For more information about the district’s transfer policy or if you need assistance, contact Jennifer Schroeder at 541-757-5874 or

"Gentle Start" to Kindergarten

The start of school in the fall is different for kindergarteners than for other students. A “gentle start” approach is used to help students and teachers get to know each other on a more personal basis before the entire class meets together.

During the first week of school, kindergarten teachers will meet one-on-one with students and their parents to get acquainted and to perform a few quick, informal assessments. Then, kindergarteners will attend their first day of class along with just half of their classmates to allow their teacher more time to interact with each child and teach key skills necessary for success in kindergarten. After each half of the class goes through this orientation time, the entire class starts school together.

Parents should call their school office in late August to find out what day and time their child is to arrive at school the first time. All kindergarten classes will be in session by Sept. 11, 2013.
