What is scrip?
"Scrip" is like substitute money, in the form of certificates or debit-style cash cards. You purchase these from JPAT and use like cash at them participating merchants. You buy the certificates at face value ($25 buys you $25 worth, for example), but JPAT is able to buy in bulk at a discount. The difference between the discounted amount and face value is JPAT's profit, used to support a variety of classroom and school needs. This year we are implementing a credit system which allows parents to apply a portion of the profits from their scrip purchases directly to their child's classroom activities.
So it doesn't cost me extra, like traditional fundraisers?
No! All the scrip you purchase has full value. When you pay $100 for a Fred Meyer card it is worth $100 at the store.
How much money does the school make?
While the percentages vary from 3% up to 25%, the success of the program and the amount of money raised are in direct proportion to the participation of Jefferson families. It's entirely up to you! Last year the scrip program raised over $4,400 to use toward Jefferson programs. This year, with more table sales times, more scrip on hand for immediate purchase, and a new incentive program, we expect to raise even more.
How will the money be used?
Money raised from the scrip program is used for a variety of JPAT-funded projects at Jefferson, including art and literature programs, art supplies, field trip transportation, technology, and classroom materials. In addition, our exciting new credit program will earmark scrip profits for specific individuals and classrooms (see below).
Tell me about the new incentive program!
Our scrip volunteers will track each family's scrip purchases. The profit earned on the family's purchases will be split 50/50 with JPAT. The family portion of the profit may be applied directly toward your child's classroom expenses, including field trips and special projects. The other 50 percent of your purchase profit goes to JPAT for general support of Jefferson programs. If your share of the profit exceeds that needed for your child's expenses, it will go to your child's classroom fund for use by the teacher on overall classroom needs. Credit will be reported monthly to the teachers.
Example: In one month you purchase $100 of Fred Meyer, $10 of McDonalds, $20 of Blockbuster Video, $20 of Grass Roots Books and $20 of Photo Espresso scrip. This generates a profit of $12.90 overall, to be split with JPAT. Your portion is $6.45, applied directly to fees associated with your child's classroom activities. And this is just one month with modest scrip use!
How can I buy scrip?
1) Buy scrip at school during 'table times' We have a large selection of scrip in stock and available at the front entrance to the school each day of the week, for about half an hour each time: Each afternoon during pick-up (approximately 2:20-2:50pm) and Tuesday mornings during drop-off (approximately 8:00-8:30am).
2) Pre-order and pre-pay If the table times don't work for you, you may order your scrip. Order forms (found next to the scrip mailbox) and payment by check may be turned into the locked scrip mailbox in the entrance to the school. Your scrip will generally be available within one day, for pick-up at the office at your convenience. You can also choose to attach a self-addressed stamped envelope to your order if you wish to have your scrip mailed to you. However, JPAT does not assume liability for scrip orders once they are mailed. Please note that due to liability issues, we can no longer send scrip home with children.
What scrip is available and on-hand right now?
Lots! - too many to list here! Check out the attached Merchant Summary (an Excel file), or pick up a copy at the Jefferson Office, which also shows each merchants policy on giving change. We currently have scrip in varying denominations from 30 different merchants. Toward the holidays we will make an even larger list of merchants available through pre-paid orders. Additionally, Albertson's Community Partners cards are available and so simple to use. Just have the clerk scan the card any time during your purchase and a percentage comes back to JPAT (cannot be tracked to individual families).
What if I can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on scrip at a time?
Scrip certificates are available in varying denominations - from $1, $2, $5 or $10 up to $250, depending on the merchant. Buy as much or as little as you like. Remember, this is money you are already spending on groceries, video rentals, books, meals out, etc! We are not asking you to spend outside your family budget, but simply to plan ahead enough to allow you to route some of those dollars through JPAT's scrip program.
Can my friends and family buy scrip?
Absolutely! Some of our merchant partners are strictly local, so your Corvallis friends and family members can buy scrip to spend here in town. Out of town family members and friends can buy scrip from you for Safeway, Fred Meyer, Borders and many others.

Be sure to take advantage of the gift-giving potential of scrip!

Many of our merchant partners are found nationwide. Gift certificates/cards to these merchants make terrific gifts for birthdays, holidays, teacher appreciation, weddings, baby showers and more.
