Science Sleuth Question
Questions are posted in each classroom and on the bulletin
board across from Mr. Sawtelle's Office. Winners and the correct answer are announced Thursday afternoon on the
school's public address system.
Week of
May 22-25, 2009- What Am I?
·
I am a unique kind of
crustacean that lives on land. Most other crustaceans - like lobsters and
crabs – live in water.
·
I am part of a
special group of crustaceans called isopods – which means equal foot –
because all my feet are the same shape.
·
My scientific name is
Armadillidium vulgare. But
some people call me a “wood louse”.
·
I play the role of a
decomposer in the food chain by eating rotting plant material and
returning nutrients to the soil.
·
I breathe through
gills, not lungs, which is why I really need a home that is moist.
·
I am most commonly
found under rocks, logs, leaf piles and other places that dark and moist.
