Wildlife Stewards Report

Many groups helped maintain our wildlife habitat education site along Dixon Creek behind Jefferson this summer. Thanks to Corvallis Parks and Rec Youth Volunteers and the Kiwanis who watered and weeded weekly. Thanks to Boy Scout Troup 163 for installing a set of benches, Corvallis Public Works for providing water for our new plantings and Corvallis Disposal for the use of two yard recycle bins throughout the summer.

Project Background

Last year, 4-H Wildlife Steward Patti Warner worked with 5th grade teacher Kristin Erickson putting together a stream enhancement plan aimed at creating a hands-on wildlife habitat education site for students to serve as a model of urban stream enhancement. Our project involves Dixon Creek between Circle and Kings Blvd. behind Jefferson Elementary. This year we have received many awards and donations for this project. An OWEB, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board grant provided us with over 800 bare root native trees and shrubs.
Every class at Jefferson Elementary (K-5) has experienced hands-on learning along the creek this year. Students and community members will monitor this area over the next three years. Ultimately we hope others will "adopt" sections of urban creeks in Corvallis using this project as a model.

We have many community partners including OSU Extension 4-H, Corvallis Public Works, Benton Soil and Water Conservation District, Oregon Fish and Wildlife, Corvallis Parks and Rec, Corvallis Disposal and Recycle and Corvallis Audubon Society. The project will require maintenance as far as watering and weed control over the next two years. Of course we would like as many community members to become involved as possible resulting in a feeling of pride and ownership of the area.
