Principal's
Corner- Denise Gorthy |
| The building is
humming with activities, and it hardly seems possible that we’re halfway
through the school year. I’ve really enjoyed watching the children take
on new learning challenges and successfully practice new skills.
The Oregon State Report Cards were released on January 25, 2002. Each
school in Oregon is rated according to student performance, school
characteristics, and student behavior. Jefferson received a Strong rating
overall, with an Exceptional rating in school characteristics. We are
proud of our accomplishments and will work for continued improvement for
next year. A copy of the Oregon State Report Card for Jefferson will be
given to each family the by March 22. The report may be accessed on the
web site for the Department of Education at www.ode.state.or.us.
If you have any questions about the Oregon State Report Card for
Jefferson, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 7575-5951. |
The budget process
begins in earnest in February and March. As you may know, the state faces
a budget shortfall which translates into budget reductions for the
district. Watch for opportunities for input into the district and building
level budgets. Your input helps us determine what our school community
needs. I hope you will inform us of your thoughts either at forums or
through email and/or letters.

|
Third and fifth
grade students will complete the Reading and Math Multiple Choice state
assessments between March 16-April 20. This might be a good time to touch
bases with your child’s classroom teacher and determine what support
your child needs to succeed on these assessments. Working together, we can
ensure all students have opportunities to meet benchmarks on state
assessments.
Finally, I’d like to acknowledge that these are stressful times for all
of us. We are fortunate at Jefferson to have strong parent support, and I
appreciate all that you do for your children and the staff at Jefferson.
As we move forward through the second half of the school year, please don’t
hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. |

| Emergency
School Closures |
The school has an
emergency school closure plan that is implemented when weather conditions
or other emergency situations during the school day call for early
dismissal of students. Your help in the following ways will ensure that
the dismissal plan runs smoothly and that your child gets home safely.
Be sure the school has a current phone
number for your home and work, as well as for people you would like us
to contact when we can’t get in touch with you. To update your child’s
information, you may complete the form on the
next page and return it to the school office.
To eliminate confusion at dismissal and to be sure
your child knows what procedures to follow upon arriving at home, it is
important that your child knows what plans you have made for early
dismissal situations. Please review your plan with your child. |
The school is
required to make contact with every child’s parent or your emergency
designee, so it is essential to keep the phone lines as free as possible
for the school’s use. Therefore, please make only necessary phone
calls to the school office.
Classroom teachers are responsible for keeping track of children, so
parents are required to check their child out with the classroom teacher
Parents are always welcome to help with phone calling, keeping track
of children, and all the other details required when we’re hurrying to
dismiss students ahead of a
storm or other emergency. If you can help, please
check in with the school secretary.
|
If it is
necessary to immediately evacuate the school, staff and students will walk
to the Kings Circle Assembly of God Church located at 2110 NW Circle Blvd.

Tobacco Use Prevention News |

|
| Colds, sniffles and coughs! This
time of year is known for taking sick days, but can you afford to take a
day off when your child is sick? Sometimes it can be difficult, so one
thing you can do is make sure your child is not exposed to secondhand
smoke. The burning end of a cigarette is what produces a smoke filled with
4,000 chemicals. Infants and children who are around smoking often get
more colds, chronic bronchitis, asthma, and hospitalizations for inner ear |
infections than
children not exposed. To prevent your child’s being sick from secondhand
smoke, here are some simple things you can do:
Be sure to step outside to smoke
Don't smoke in the car when children are riding with you
Best of all, quit smoking!
If you would like help quitting, please call and talk with a trained
specialist from the Oregon Quit line at 1-877-270-STOP. It's free,
confidential and has helped over 70,000 Oregonians quit! |
This message is
brought to you by the Corvallis School District's Tobacco Prevention and
Education Program. If you would like to participate in any way, please
contact Cathy Martin at 541-757-3912. Your time and interest would be
greatly appreciated!

Bundle
Up For Winter |
|
| Please be sure your children are
dressed warmly during the cold winter months. Children play outside even
during the coldest weather. |
In addition, because of cuts in the
school district budget, thermostats in schools are being set a degree or
two lower. The minimum setting is 68 degrees, which is |
in line with state
standards, but chilly enough to warrant warm clothes for comfort. |
