District Conducts Parent Survey as Part of Diversity Assessment

September 9, 2008 03:58 PM

This fall district staff will be conducting an assessment of the Corvallis School District that will serve as the foundation for a district-wide diversity and inclusion plan. The assessment will include parent and student surveys; parent, student, staff, and community focus groups; school climate walk-through inventories at each school; and review of diversity-related data. A staff survey was conducted last May.

The goals of the assessment process are to:
• Identify key diversity-related challenges and opportunities in the district.
• Provide a foundation for the district-wide diversity and inclusion action plan.
• Build relationships and partnerships between the school district and our surrounding community.

In September and early October, the district will be conducting a parent survey. 509J parents may take the survey by clicking on the following link. The survey will take about 5- 10 minutes.

Spanish Version

The survey will be distributed to parents electronically in English and Spanish through each school’s parent email list. In addition, for those who do not have computer access, the survey will be available at school open houses and other parent meetings. Surveys also will be available in Korean at school sites.

The written survey will be followed up with focus groups to delve deeper into any issues that emerge, and to ensure that we are reaching a representative cross-section of our parent population.

The diversity/inclusion assessment is part of work that began in fall 2006, when the Corvallis School Board and Superintendent Dawn Tarzian collaborated to launch a community visioning process. The goal of the Corvallis Community Vision for Education was to engage the citizens of Corvallis in a conversation about the quality and character of Corvallis public schools and to create a shared vision that would guide the work of the district in the future. In the fall of 2007, the Corvallis 509J School Board approved 17 recommendation areas based on the input of participants in the community visioning process. This diversity and inclusion assessment is the first step in implementing the recommendation areas that are related to diversity and inclusion: Equity, Access, and School Choice; Global Perspective; Safe Environment; and Welcoming, Inclusive Schools.
