October 7, 2008 03:41 PM
Corvallis School District superintendent Dawn Tarzian is seeking people from diverse backgrounds, including ethnicity, cultures and beliefs, to serve on a committee that will guide the remaining steps in the district’s diversity/inclusion assessment process, study the information and data gathered, and then develop a diversity/inclusion action plan for the district.
Criteria for appointing committee members will include:
• Interest in working collaboratively to move the district forward in identifying and addressing diversity and equity issues
• Willingness to speak honestly about concerns and issues related to the committee’s work
• Available to attend all meetings and actively participate (meeting times will likely be in the late afternoons, depending on the schedules of the committee members).
If you are interested in participating on this committee, please complete the questionnaire at this link no later than October 22. To print a copy of the questionnaire, click here and submit to the Corvallis School District Central Office at 1555 S.W. 35th Street. Hard copies of the questionnaire also are available at the district office.
This diversity/inclusion assessment and planning is part of work that began in fall 2006, when the Corvallis School Board and Superintendent Dawn Tarzian collaborated to launch a community visioning process. The goal of the Corvallis Community Vision for Education was to engage the citizens of Corvallis in a conversation about the quality and character of Corvallis public schools and to create a shared vision that would guide the work of the district in the future. In the fall of 2007, the Corvallis 509J School Board approved seventeen recommendation areas based on the input of participants in the community visioning process. The assessment and planning process is the first step in implementing the recommendation areas that are related to diversity and inclusion: Equity, Access, and School Choice; Global Perspective; Safe Environment; and Welcoming, Inclusive Schools.
