Free meals available to students throughout summer

June 10, 2009 11:43 AM

The Corvallis School District is offering free summer meals to children 18 and younger at sites throughout Corvallis and in Adair Village and Philomath.

The meals are available to anyone regardless of their family’s income -- children do not have to be enrolled in the district’s Free and Reduced Meal program, explained Kathy Adair, administrative assistant in the Food Services Department.

Each of the meal sites will offer lunch four to five days a week. Four of them will provide breakfast as well. The food must be eaten on site and parents or guardians also are welcome to purchase a breakfast for $1.75 or lunch for $3.

“We’re trying to make sure that the children in our community are getting at least one balanced meal every day during the week,” Adair said. “This is another opportunity for us to help support local families during this economic recession when they may be struggling financially.”

The summer meal program, which started 14 years ago, is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program. Each meal is subject to federal nutritional standards and includes an entrée, milk, fruit and/or a vegetable and a bread item. Local fruits and vegetables are offered when available.
