Diversity and Inclusion Committee hosts community forum

June 11, 2009 11:39 AM

Key findings of a diversity and inclusion assessment conducted by the Corvallis School District this year will be presented at a community forum on Wednesday, June 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the district office, 1555 S.W. 35th St.

The district’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee will share the results of its work over the past year to identify diversity-related challenges and opportunities in Corvallis schools. The forum also will be the first of several community dialogues about how to create and implement an effective diversity action plan next fall.

The 30-member committee, made up of staff and community members from diverse backgrounds and cultures, has spent the last seven months preparing its report. The diversity assessment itself has been in process since last spring. As part of this process, the committee reviewed results of surveys completed by staff, parents and students. The committee conducted a school climate inventory at each school to determine how welcoming the physical environment each building is for all students and parents. Committee members also studied student achievement data, behavior data, demographics, student participation rates in advanced placement classes, quality of translation services and more.

The diversity and inclusion assessment is linked to recommendations related to diversity, equity and safe learning environments found in the Corvallis Community Vision for Education. This document, approved by the Corvallis School Board in the fall of 2007, represents the feedback of more than 1,300 community members about what kind of education Corvallis should offer its students.

Any parent needing child care to attend, should call 757-5840.
